PREFACE
The most unforgivable sin in science is for scientists to claim that something exists when in fact they know that it does not. This is also true when researchers falsify or try to interpret information to suit their own personal beliefs and needs. It is also a travesty of science to say that something does not exist, especially when the scientists have not determined if in fact it does or does not. This is a persisting problem that we as paranormal researchers have had over the years with the study of the UFO phenomenon. Mainstream science has turned a deaf ear to the credible reports of encounters with something truly incredible. On the other hand, some UFO researchers also have been guilty of exaggerating the experiences of UFO witnesses and stretching the proof to prove the reality of the phenomenon. These researchers have also had predetermined ideas about what the UFO experience represents, and they have often manipulated the evidence to support and defend their own ideas. Science is the pursuit to understand the unknown, and if a scientist is going to be an objective researcher, then all egos must be put aside and only the evidence must be analyzed. Those who investigate UFO reports must begin their investigation with an open mind and collect only the facts. However, no matter how skeptical you are about UFOs, there are three things that can not be denied: UFO reports exist, they persist, and its a global phenomenon.
I have been investigating and researching paranormal phenomena (which includes UFOs) for thirty years and must make it very clear that I investigate UFO reports and not UFOs themselves. This is why the study of UFOs can be so fleeting-we can only gather data on the effects the UFOs had on the environment and individuals. We are also limited to video, digital, and photographic images, which are not really good evidence, since most UFO evidence of this type is easily faked and still highly controversial. There are real images out there of these mysterious objects, but each year it is getting more difficult to determine what is authentic and what is not. It is my personal belief that there are a number of different types of intelligent beings responsible for the overall UFO experience. The UFO experience includes sightings, channeling, abductions, and other forms of contact. I myself have had four sightings and know that it is all very real, and we need to know more about the true nature and purpose of this intelligence. In this book, I have proposed new ideas to help shed some light on this age-old phenomenon. I have written the book so that both the beginner and the more experienced investigator will benefit from the information and research gathered from my thirty-plus years in the field. The chapters that cover some of the most famous UFO cases in history should not be overlooked by well-read UFOlogists, since they contain new and important information that has never been published.
My previous books, Night Siege, Contact of the 5th Kind, and Celtic Mysteries in New England, all document my work in the area of paranormal research. This book is the last book I will write that focuses on the UFO situation. This is because unless I personally make contact, I have gone as far as anyone can go by gathering information in the field. To get a better understanding of my work and how it evolved over the years, I would suggest that you read my previous works before you read this one.
To me, the past thirty years of research in the field has been more of an adventure and a spiritual journey of awareness than a scientific project. During my long journey, I have met a great number of interesting people and was privileged to work with some of the top researchers in the field. These people included Dr. J. Allen Hynek, John G. Fuller, Budd Hopkins, John Keel, John Burton, and Whitley Strieber, and I also give special thanks to the publishers of UFO Magazine, Nancy and Bill Birnes, for educating the public and keeping them informed and updated concerning the current UFO situation. I hope this book gives you the motivation to continue the research that I and many others have started, because if we are ever to solve the UFO mystery, we must have a clear view of what we left behind and what lies ahead. We can only accomplish this by standing on the shoulders of those who came before us.

ROSWELL:
THE STORY THAT
WILL NOT FADE AWAY
It has been more than six decades since the beginning of what has been called the modern UFO era, and although the phenomenon seems to come and go in cycles, there is no indication that sightings and close encounters have vanished to become part of our mythology. It all began on June 25, 1947, when Kenneth Arnold (fig. 1), a private pilot, witnessed a number of unknown objects flying over the Cascade Mountains in Washington State at great speed. When he was asked by the media to describe what the strange aerial objects looked like, he replied, They looked like saucers skipping across water. Thus the term flying saucer was born to describe the unknown aircraft that Arnold saw that day. The truth of the matter is, Arnold never said that they were saucer- or diskshaped-he was trying to describe to the press how the objects moved across the sky. When he drew the unknown aircraft he witnessed for federal investigators, his artistic representation showed the mystery object as looking like a boomerang or chevron and not a saucer. However, they were still called flying saucers by the media, and from that time until today, the citizens of planet Earth have reported seeing thousands of them each year to the government leaders of the world, who have just turned their backs on the reports as if they did not exist.
