Acknowledgments

T his book exists because I wanted to learn how to illustrate comic books. I used to collect comics and I used to copy the illustrations. My mother, a portrait artist, encouraged me. I took a drawing class my first year of college, and had such a frustrating experience with it that I gave it up. But I never gave up wanting to be able to create my own illustrations.

In summer 2012, Sean DSouza, the marketing guru behind Psychotactics.com , sent out an email announcing the Da Vinci Online Cartooning course. I got the email late one night, read the sales letter, checked out the web page with the course description and testimonials from past students, and immediately registered for the program.

The course took place in an online bulletin board community. We had to post our assignments in the forums, so we could receive (and give) feedback. The students came from all over the world, and yet we very quickly formed close, supportive relationships and a tight-knit community. This was a fascinating experience for me, both as a student and as a teacher.
