INTRODUCTION

The world first heard of the Mothman in November of 1966, when a series of sightings of a large, black, flying creature with glowing red eyes took place in and around Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The sightings ostensibly culminated in the collapse of the Silver Bridge, and to this day there are some that maintain the creature's appearance was a portent to the disaster.

On December 15th, 1967, the Silver Bridge, which spanned the Ohio River between Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio, buckled and collapsed. 46 people died when the bridge gave way during the rush hour. The bridges catastrophic failure was officially due to a faulty eyebar in the suspension chain, but some feel that the eerie flying humanoid haunting the area might be connected to its collapse, especially since the sightings associated with that seemed to end after the disaster.

Author John Keel claimed to have received prophetic messages from an unknown entity while investigating the unusual events leading up to the disaster, even going so far as to prepare for a widespread blackout along the East Coast based on these weird warnings. Keel was later horrified to learn of the Silver Bridge tragedy that occurred around the same time as the portended blackout, which itself never came to pass.

The tragedy at the Silver Bridge is, to date, the only recorded disaster to be associated with Mothman wherein the creature was sighted prior to the unfortunate event; although folkloric accounts exist saying that Mothman was present at many historic disasters. According to cryptozoologist, researcher, and author Loren Coleman, these later stories are based on events taken from fictional sources, such as The Mothman Prophecies feature film, that have made their way into the Mothman's mythology.

The Chernobyl story, the Galveston Hurricane-Mothman tie-in, and other examples given in the 2002 movie were pure fiction [] right after the movie was released, various websites posted the Chernobyl/Mothman reports as factual. But there is not one thread of evidence that any winged weirdies were witnessed before the Chernobyl accident. It is a bit of movie fiction that has, unfortunately, moved into pseudo-factoid cryptozoology," said Coleman.

Still, many people believe that the Mothman was a harbinger of that particular disaster in Point Pleasant, and that perhaps his appearances ended with the tragedy, although theres little evidence to support the claim. In fact, thanks to an influx of weird, winged creature sightings starting in Chicago in the spring of 2017, theres evidence to show that the sightings never really stopped at all. They simply shifted slightly, sliding ethereally over to another geographic location with a history of high strangenessLake Michigan.

PROLOGUE

October 27 th , 1969, less than two years after the Silver Bridges collapse seemingly signaled the end of Mothmans reign of terror over Point Pleasant, West Virginia, young Floyd Hancock lay asleep in the small room he shared with his infant sister in his familys trailer just outside of Rolling Prairie, Indiana. Recent damage to their home had left a hole in the living room ceiling that went clear through the roof, which the family had covered with a tarp until it could be repaired.

Perhaps it was the strange noise or disagreeable odor he noticed immediately upon waking that had interrupted his slumber; or, perhaps, it was some other aspect of the tall, winged humanoid looming over his sisters bed that was responsible. Floyd froze in shock, taking in the full measure of the beast as it slowly turned to face him. The creature might have been between seven and eight feet tallit was hard to tell with its crouched posturebut its huge, leathery wings and muscular limbs were apparent; so too was its face: thin and skeletal, with sharp teeth and dark eyes.

He screamed for his parents then, like any of us would have, but they didnt come. Only Floyds grandmother, who was staying with the family, responded to his cry. But she was immediately stricken by the monstrousness of the thing before her and fell to her knees, stunned. The monster crossed the room and lifted Floyd into its arms, his grandmother helpless to prevent it. Floyd was swept up and away by the winged beast, which carried him into the living room and out through the hole into the night air. He remembers being cold and wet as the creature flew higher, the panicked screams of his grandmother fading in the distanceand then nothing. Floyd woke up in his bed sometime later to the terrified faces of his parents and grandmother.

Floyds parents had been put into some sort of hypnotic trance during his abduction, regaining their senses only after the monster had absconded with their son. They waited in frigid anxiety for several minutes that seemed to stretch into eternity, afraid to call the police with such a wild tale. Soon enough the frantic family heard scratching on the roof, followed by a solid thud. Floyds father climbed on top of the trailer to investigate the noises and found him there, unconscious. He was brought inside, dried off, and placed back in his bed. They never contacted the authorities or sought medical attention out of fear of the questions that might be raised.

CHAPTER ONE
THE MOTHMAN COMETH

It was the end of April, 2017 when I first heard about the winged creature sightings in Chicago, although I didnt start covering the story until early May. If I had known then what I know now, I would have done things a lot differently, but I didnt, so this is what I did instead.

The whole affair started innocently enough: three reports had been submitted to the Mutual UFO Networks (MUFON) sighting report database, each one describing slight variations on a theme; some sort of giant winged creature causing fear and confusion among the residents of Americas third largest city. The reports came in within a week of each other, and MUFON bundled them all up and put them in an article on their website. Mothman-Type Creature Reported over Chicago the headline declared; naturally, I was intrigued.

The sightings reportedly occurred between 10 p.m. April 15 th and 2 a.m. April 16 th . They were reported out of chronological order, so I decided to organize them by time and date instead of by when they hit MUFONs reporting center. The first sighting, MUFON case report 83325, was reported by a woman who said shed been out on Lake Michigan with her husband and two other couples celebrating a friends birthday. They were just off of Montrose Beach when, at about 10 p.m., she glanced up and saw what looked like a giant bat. It was definitely not a fox bat, she decided later after doing a little research into large bat species.
