In the twentieth century the invention of aircraft and then spacecraft created new approaches to the ancient questions about the basic nature of the universe that we inhabit. With new technologies emerging from those discoveries of aviation and spaceflight, and other new inventions allowing us to look ever more deeply into the heavens, we discover a myriad of new galaxies, each with billions of star systems, and the total array extending into the heavens seemingly to infinity. On that evidence alone, the question: Are we alone in the universe? is the equivalent of suggesting that one particular grain of sand on a beach is markedly different than all the other grains of sand on all the beaches of the world.

In addition, however, the evidence that we have been visited by beings from some of those distant worlds is becoming overwhelmingly obvious to those who look carefully at the evidence. Whether the visitations are increasing in frequency is an open question. Some evidence suggests that visitation has been occurring for hundreds of years. However, our science and its evidence can only postulate such occurrences; there is little hard evidence to point toward ancient visitation.

The famous incident termed the Roswell Incident in 1947 near Roswell, New Mexico, has become a landmark event in the study of UFOs and caused intensified questions about alien presence and intentions. In the more than six decades since that event, the study of UFO sightings, alien presence and activities has consumed the attention of well-educated and qualified investigators. In spite of denials and serious efforts by many governments to deny, the evidence has continued to mount for alien presence and activities. The learned and intelligent citizenry is becoming convinced that, indeed, our Earth is being visited by an advanced technological species. As our space faring technology on Earth has not yet provided humans the capability to explore extensively within our own solar system, with manned vehicles, much less go beyond, it is obvious that we humans have much to learn about exploring more deeply into Nature.

Some of the most interesting series of reports of alien activity are the reports by military personnel of interference by the visitors with military rockets capable of conducting intercontinental warfare. Many such rockets, ready to launch from their silos toward a prospective enemy, have been disabled by UFOs. The evidence, though hidden from public disclosure at the time, has been available to serious researchers. It is good to know that the visitors do not approve of our preparations for a global war. It certainly makes the alien presence less threatening. This is not to imply that all the events with aliens have been reported as peaceful and benign. There have been cases of reported abductions, and testing of human specimens against their will. The available literature has numerous events of both types. It sounds not too different than we humans going into new territories and uncharted waters and being less than cooperative with the natives.

The explosion of human population during the 20th century from less than 2 billion persons to over 7 billion in less than 100 years, and still continuing to grown in the 21st century, with the attendant consumption of limited resources and increased technological creation that strains Earth's capability to sustain life, is a major cause of concern to those who look at the larger perspective. It is most likely that the alien visitors are aware of the limits that evolution places on planets in a solar system. Their presence is not without knowledge of Earths predicament of population and limiting resources. We can hope that at the proper time, they may be helpful in solving this very difficult problem.

As we humans have now begun our own travels in space, we may be better able to anticipate and prepare for the required technologies and the new understanding that a modern perspective of reality requires. The universe (or, multi-verse, if you prefer) is vastly larger and more complex than our ancestors, even early in the 20th century, could possibly imagine. Our trips to our moon, and the reality of experiencing another heavenly body has begun the process of reaching outward toward the distance stars a process that will surely accelerate with time and as new knowledge comes to be.

My own experience of visiting the moon on Apollo 14 allowed an explorer's impulses to be vented. The press of time and limited resources caused us to follow our planned and practiced regimen as precisely as possible. And the practice on Earth to be timely and precise paid off. We were able to do our planned exploration and collect samples of the moon just as had been planned. Of course the reduced gravity and the lack of atmosphere could not be easily practiced on Earth, but the anticipation allowed adequate accommodation with that reality. As explorers bent on collecting samples and data from our designated landing site we were quite successful in accomplishing those tasks; thus proving the point that study and prolonged practice pay off in success of the actual venture.

The following is a series of questions posed to Dr. Mitchell by the author pertaining to his personal experiences on the moon.

1. What were your thoughts when you actually placed your foot on another planetary body?

After taking in and absorbing the new landscape, the thoughts were to get back to work, and do the tasks we had practiced for this landing site.

1. What was it like to stand for the first time and gaze over the close and distant landscape of the moon? Was this comparable to any place you had been on Earth?

No, the desolate, dry, desert like crater-marked surface without any atmosphere and with 1/6 the gravitation has no real Earthly comparison.

3. Were you able to see the stars when you looked overhead?

No, for the same reason you cannot see stars during the day from the Earths surface: the Sun is too bright and obscures starlight. If you were to adequately shield you eyes and sun reflections you could see the stars, as there is no atmosphere to scatter the star light.
