CHIRON AND THE HEALING JOURNEY
The ancient science of astrology, founded on the correlation between celestial movements and terrestrial events, recognizes the universe as an indivisible whole in which all parts are interconnected. Mirroring this perception of the unity of life, modern physics has revealed the web of relationship underlying everything in existence. Despite the inevitable backlash as old paradigms expire, we are now entering an age where scientific explanations and models of the cosmos are in accord with basic astrological principles and beliefs. In such a climate, astrology is emerging from relative obscurity, to become once again a serious study offering a greater understanding of our true nature as inhabitants of a living cosmos imbued with sacred mysteries.
Melanie Reinhart was born in Zimbabwe, whose night skies inspired her vocation of astrology at an early age. She holds a B.A. in Music and Drama, and is an award-winning diploma-holder of the Faculty of Astrological Studies, and in 2009 became one of their patrons. In 2004 she received the Charles Harvey Award, given by the Astrological Association of Great Britain, 'for exceptional service to astrology'. She has been a professional astrologer since 1975; her rich background experience in many psychological and spiritual disciplines draws a worldwide clientele. Melanie has taught for some of the world's leading astrology schools including the Faculty of Astrological Studies, the London School of Astrology, the Centre for Psychological Astrology and Astro*Synthesis. She has also offered lectures and workshops at many local and international venues, and runs her own programme, based mostly in London.
First published in 1989, this book was the fruit of many years of research, continued and extended in 1996 to include further groundbreaking material on the 'Centaurs' which was published by CPA Press. Other published work includes numerous journal articles, contributions to 'Modern South Africa in Search of a Soul' (1990), 'Wilderness and the Human Spirit' (1997) and 'The Mars Quartet' (2001). Her books have been translated into six languages, and include 'Saturn, Chiron and the Centaurs' (1996/2002) and Incarnation' (1997). The process of reworking this material has been blessed with support and encouragement from many more people than specifically named below. Much of what is written here was originally learned through reflecting on the life stories Ive been privileged to hear about over the last 32 years from clients, colleagues, students and friends. Without their input, this book would not have come to exist, and in this sense, it has been a collective endeavour. My gratitude goes especially to the regulars at my groups, who were a real inspiration with their enthusiasm and dedication to the inner process, and their appreciation of the living art of astrology.
Specific thanks are due to a number of people: Eileen Cadman for her precision and subtlety with editing help, and her invaluable work on the index; Carole Taylor for her detailed reading, astrological corrections and helpful comments, especially on the section about rulership; Jane Ridder-Patrick and Margaret Cahill for encouraging me to self-publish; Frank Clifford for many wonderful conversations, both serious and hilarious, and for his numerous crucial suggestions and supportive advice; Evelyn Roberts for inviting me to Bali; Sacha for his hospitality there during the later stages of this revision; and Roy Gillett, who generously did a midpoint scan for me, locating the CH = SA/UR configurations; Beata Bishop for her reading of the section on Max Gerson; Dr. Graeme Munro-Hall for allowing me to tell his story.
Honour is also due to those no longer on the Earth plane, but who visited during the archaeology required by this revision. I name here but a few: Our Lady of the Hermits, whose invisible presence kept me company in the intense solitude that this work required; Sitara, whose name means The Star; Pir OMurshid Fazal Inayat Khan, crazy wisdom master; my parents Val and Rosemary; my godmother Nora, and my grandmother Eliza; Moy Keightley, who helped compile the original index. Finally, without Howard Sasportas, editor of the first edition, this material might never have reached book form. My deepest gratitude goes to him for his encouragement, and for believing in this material when Chiron was still virtually unknown. Howards Chiron was in Scorpio and conjunct his Midheaven, and his words really summarize this book:
Chiron is about the wounds that make us wise.
Much of your pain is self-chosen.
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you
heals your sick self.
Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy
in silence and tranquillity:
For his hand, though heavy and hard,
is guided by the tender hand
of the Unseen.

Preface to the 3rd edition
My initial task in preparing this revision was to include the new astronomical discoveries relevant to understanding Chiron. This was an enjoyable and relatively straightforward process. The next task proved to be a bigger undertaking, and more fascinating than I had anticipated. While updating the final section, Spirit of the Age, it became apparent how much the world has changed since the first edition, written in 1987-88. Perhaps appropriately, Chiron was in Aquarius as the revision began; it was completed with Saturn opposite Uranus. The first edition was written when these planets were conjunct in late Sagittarius, and conjunct the Galactic Centre.
