ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
THE ADVANCE READERS of this book have mentioned its easy-flowing and reader-friendly style. Credit for this must go to the reformatting and fine-tuning of my original manuscript by my editor and publisher, Barbara Brett. I am deeply grateful for her editorial skill and her diligent help in presenting A.D.'s material to the readers of this book.
I also want to express my thanks to author Hy Brett, Barbara's husband, for his support and help in many ways.
My thanks are also given to the Reverend Eric J. Gustayson, former student of A.D. Mattson, for his permission to quote from his tribute to A.D. on the occasion of A.D.'s retirement, and to Dr. Sally Feather of the Rhine Research Center for permission to quote from J.B. Rhine's book New World of the Mind.
I must also express my sincere appreciation to the gracious and busy people who gave of their time to do an advance reading of the manuscript and whose overwhelming, positive response reinforced my own conviction of the importance of A.D.'s message for our world today. My thanks for this goes to: the Reverend Elizabeth W Fenske, Ph.D., Executive Director of Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship International; to Elda Hartley, President of Hartley Film Foundation and Life Director of the Institute of Noetic Sciences; to Juliet Hollister, founder of The Temple of Understanding; to John F. Miller III, Ph.D., President of the Academy of Religion and Psychical Research; to the Reverend John H. Nasstrom, Ph.D., retired Lutheran pastor and church executive, and former student of A.D. Mattson; to the Right Reverend Bennett J. Sims, Bishop Emeritus of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, and founder and president of the Institute for Servant Leadership; to Frank Tribbe, Editor of Spiritual Frontiers J ournal; and to Claire Walker, Ph.D., Editor of Reflections of a Theosophist.
Thanks must also be given to the Reverend William H. Gentz, who provided very early editorial guidance, and who encouraged me to include some of my own personal paranormal experiences in this book.

THE JOURNEY

PSALMS 32:8
SOMETHING STRANGE HAPPENED when I was a little girl. I lived with my parents in the Lutheran parsonage at St. James, Minnesota, and one autumn night after a fresh snowfall, our doorbell rang at three o'clock in the morning. My father, the Reverend A.D. Mattson, went down to open the door. He found no one there, and there were no footprints in the newly fallen snow. One could conjecture either that my father had imagined hearing the doorbell, or that he had dreamed it. But both my mother and a young schoolteacher who roomed at the parsonage had also heard the bell.
The next morning, when the three of them were having breakfast together, the phone rang. The phone call was from my father's sister, Lydia, who was a nurse at the Lutheran hospital in Moline, Illinois. Lydia was calling to tell us that my father's Aunt Amanda had died during the night, at around three o'clock in the morning.
EVIDENCE FROM BEYOND
Some parapsychologists would explain the simultaneous ringing of the parsonage doorbell and the death of Amanda as a physical manifestation by Amanda's spirit to tell her nephew that she had died. Such physical manifestations by spirit personalities are categorized as telekinesis, and in paranormal literature there are many references to such happenings. Over the years, similar occurrences at the deaths of several of my mother's relatives had led us to accept these phenomena as a normal part of life.
My father had an active interest in parapsychology throughout his lifetime, and he was exposed to scientific investigation of these areas of study when he was doing postgraduate work at Yale Divinity School in 1929. Some of the professors there were studying the work of the famous medium Margery in Boston, as well as other paranormal phenomena. On numerous occasions, my father had said that when he died, he would certainly attempt to communicate with us.
Affectionately known as 'A.D." to hundreds of former students, colleagues, and friends, my father, Lutheran theologian Alvin Daniel Mattson, S.T.D., died on October 19, 1970. His communication from Beyond began in 1971. Although not as frequent as it was in the first few years after his death, his contact has continued to the present time.
