Sarah: A Sexual Biography: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Sarah: A Sexual Biography" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Sarah is the detailed case history of a UCLA undergraduate, written by a UCLA psychology professor. It is a unique case of psychological survival. Despite vicious sexual abuse, Sarah has managed to adapt, survive, and grow. Balancing the intense emotional impact of Sarahs first-person account, Dr. Abramsons commentary is interpolated throughout the record of Sarahs life. Sarahs story was obtained from seven months of interviewing, plus her diaries, drawings, family photographs, and four years of follow-ups, correspondence, and observations. This book is significant in that it documents psychological resolution in the face of endless abuse and trauma. Dr. Abramson provides an unusual perspective by focusing less on the damage associated with abuse and more on Sarahs gradual development of successful means of coping and surmounting negative patterns.

Accidental events frequently turn out better than well planned ones. We contacted Paul Abramson in January of 1983 about the possibility of writing a book or chapter dealing with the assessment of sexual arousal. He expressed interest but informed us that he had a quite different kind of manuscript already completed, the sexual biography of a female college student. It may be seen that we contacted him without knowing that he had this book in hand, and he wrote it without knowing that Dr. Susan Suarez would be asking us to serve as editors of a new publishing venture for a university press. So, none of us can claim responsibility for the way in which it developed, but it is particularly appropriate that a case history constitutes the initial volume in the SUNY Press series on Sexual Behavior.
There is increasing reason to believe that psychosexology is finally coming of age as a science (see Byrne, 1977a, 1982; Davis, 1983), and we are justly proud of today's sophisticated research techniques, growing data base, and developing theoretical formulations. It should be remembered, however, that the enterprise began with descriptions and interpretations of the behavior of individuals such as "Sarah." What can be learned from the exposure of the intimate details of one person's life experiences? No two case histories are exactly alike, and the story of Sarah is unlike any other that we have read. Nevertheless, this approach to understanding human behavior can be placed in a general context that applies to all case

histories. Such a context allows us to appreciate the general characteristics of the case history method, its limitations, and the unique contributions it can make.
A Slice of Life: The First Steps Toward Understanding Sexual Behavior
In the task of understanding and controlling physical illness, a familiar historical progression has been to identify and to describe minutely the detailed symptoms of a given ailment, to seek its causes, and to ascertain its future course with and without appropriate treatment. At the end of the nineteenth century, numerous medical specialists turned their attention from physical disabilities to emotional and behavioral problems. Not surprisingly, they adopted the prevailing medical approach and proceeded to describe behavioral anomalies, to speculate about their possible physiological and experiential antecedents, and to establish prognostic probabilities. Almost all of the succeeding accounts of individual human behavior, including the one of Sarah, tend to fit within such a patternwhether written by physicians, psychologists, or social workers.
In the transition from physical to psychological concerns, it soon became obvious that the description of fever, skin eruptions, or the site of a severe pain was qualitatively different from describing the life experiences of a maladjusted individual. For one thing, it was necessary to borrow the techniques and even the style of novelists, biographers, historians, and anthropologists. Freud quickly recognized these aspects of his newly developing profession. In a letter to his fiance in 1884, he wrote that he was "becoming aware of literary stirrings when previously I could not have imagined anything further from my mind." He extended this theme in
