Many individuals have made valuable contributions to this work written in three stages over a period of eight years.

I first conceived of writing a self-help astrology text in the spring of 1978. That summer, I was able to get the book off its feet, thanks to Kay David who served as my editor and to Dean Price whose Gemini skill with words enabled me to formulate many of the keyword tables that later appeared in Astrology For Yourself.

Two years later, I was assisted by Sheila Seitz who donated her editorial feedback and by the encouragement of my friends Stuart Warren and Robert Wheeler. At this point, the book was completed, titled Beyond Sun Signs, but no publisher could be found.

The manuscript would have remained unpublished had it not been for my indispensable collaborator, Demetra George, who in October of 1985 suggested the idea of writing an astrological workbook. At that point, I realized that Beyond Sun Signs could be rewritten in a workbook format, and hence it metamorphosed into Astrology For Yourself.

During the next six hectic months, our progress was aided by the editorial feedback of Nancy Avery, Carolyn Quigley, Jim Markham, and my wife Joan. My work supervisor Brian Bergeron provided me with the flexibility to balance a demanding writing schedule with a full time job.

Finally, my heartfelt thanks go to my parents. They provided a nurturing environment that enabled me to initiate my writing career. But more important, their ongoing support of my decision to embark upon a road less traveled has enabled me to remain true to myself. For allowing me to pursue my own path of self discovery, I will always be grateful.

Astrology For Yourself is the culmination of twelve years of teaching the astrological language. During that time I experimented with a variety of graphic forms to assist students in realizing how astrological principles expressed themselves in their personal lives. To all these students I give special thanks for their efforts and feedback in refining the workbook format.

In September of 1985, as I was preparing some new handouts for a beginning astrology class, the concept for this workbook suddenly arrivedliterally pouring out of my head. For this inspiration I want to thank Mary Greer for allowing us to take off on Tarot For Your Self Jonathan Saturnen and Dennis Conroy both provided valuable input in clarifying the exercises.

Without Douglas the creation of Astrology For Yourself would not have been possible. His hard work, helpful insights and expertise in giving form to our fanciful ideas was essential for the completion of this work.

I also want to extend appreciation to Philip Russell for providing the graphics in the original self-published edition of Astrology for Yourself as well as his help in teaching me about the Macintosh computer. To my children, Daniel and Reina Frankfort, I offer a mothers gratitude for their patience and understanding during the long hours of writing.

Both Douglas and I give special thanks to our editor Randy Fingland who guided this project along the many steps to its completion.

Finally I give gratitude to the Wisdom Dakinis and the Lady Yeshe Tsogyel for glimpses of the clear light. May this offering of Astrology For Yourself benefit all beings.

Edmund Hailey: Why do you believe in Astrology?

Sir Isaac Newton: I have studied the subject, Mr. Hailey. You have not!

I SAAC NEWTON was no slouch. Many consider him to be endowed with the most brilliant and profound mind ever visited upon a mortal. Yet, despite the incredulity of Halley (the comet man) and his colleagues, Newton actually believed in astrology. So did Benjamin Franklin. And Galileo. And Carl Jung. And a host of other historical luminaries. Clearly, there might be something more to this ancient art than the overgeneralized horoscope columns that appear in the daily papers.

But how can one find out for sure if astrology does work? Is it, in the words of one astrologer, the most accurate and comprehensive means of understanding human personality, behavior change, and growth? Or is it merely a parlor game? The answer, it seems, may be easily determined if one takes Sir Isaacs advice to heart
