BEFORE COLUMBUS CAME TO AMERICA

Read to learn

1. How the Norsemen came to America.2. About the sea voyages of Leif Ericson.3. How the crusades helped the people of Europe.4. How Marco Polo helped the people of Europe know about the East.

AMERICA OUR HOME. We live in America. The Atlantic Ocean is to the east of America. Far across the Atlantic Ocean is the continent of Europe. There was a time when the people of Europe did not know about America. They did not dream that land could be reached by sailing to the west. Yet the first Mass said in America was probably said for men from Europe called the Norsemen.

Who were the Norsemen? What were they doing in America? The answer to these questions tells how America came to be known to Europeans.

THE NORSEMEN

THE NORSEMEN. The Norsemen were a strong race of sea men. They lived long ago in the northern part of Europe. They were sometimes called Northmen. The Norsemen, or Northmen, lived in what is now known as Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. They were tall and strong. They had light colored hair and blue eyes and they loved adventure. The homes of the Norsemen were only log huts. Their villages were built close to the sea, often on a bay or, as the Norsemen called it, a vik. Sometimes you will hear the Norsemen called Vikings, which means "Men of the Bay." The Norsemen were pagans. They did not know about Our Lord.

NORSE VOYAGES. Their love of adventure led the Norsemen to travel far over the seas. In their light swift ships they even sailed far to the west to Iceland. There they made a settlement which has lasted to the present day. One of the leaders of the Norsemen in Iceland was named Eric the Red. He was a quarrelsome fellow. He did not get along with his neighbors. Eric decided that he would sail even farther west. He went to Greenland, and took many followers with him. There he made a new settlement.

LEIF ERICSON Eric the Red had a son called Leif His full name was Leif - photo 5

LEIF ERICSON. Eric the Red had a son called Leif. His full name was Leif Ericson, or Leif, son of Eric. He was often called Leif the Lucky. Leif Ericson went on a voyage to Norway to see the land where his father was born. In Norway Leif met King Olaf. There he learned about Christ and Leif became a Catholic. When it was time for Leif to return to Greenland, King Olaf gave him a fine new ship. Leif the Lucky sailed west from Norway. He was eager to tell his people in Greenland about the Catholic religion.

Just what took place on this voyage is not known. The ship did not reach Greenland. Leif and his party were blown far south of Greenland. It seems certain that his ship reached North America. Just where Leif and his men landed on the coast of North America is not known. Most likely it was some spot on the coast of the land we call New England. We do know that Leif and his party finally got back to Greenland.

LATER NORSE SETTLEMENTS. Leif told about the new land. He called it Wineland the Good, or Vinland, because of the grapes found there. Later, the people in Greenland became Catholic. Some Norsemen in Greenland decided to sail to Vinland. The first Mass in America may have been said for this party in Vinland. The settlement of the Norsemen did not succeed and was forgotten. The people in Europe knew little about the voyage of the Norsemen. What the Vikings did was forgotten. Many years later a little ship named the Santa Maria sailed from Spain. This ship was named in honor of the Mother of God. It was the ship of Christopher Columbus. The voyage of Columbus really did make America known to the people of Europe.

THE CRUSADES

GEOGRAPHY BEFORE COLUMBUS. Before Christopher could make his voyage the people of Europe had to learn something of the world beyond Europe. There was a time when they knew little about distant lands. There were two reasons for this. (1) Printing from type had not been invented. There were few books to tell of distant lands. (2) Few people traveled very far. The Holy Land and the East were the places most talked about.
