Osama bin Laden called Muhammad a Prophet of Conquest. Pakistans Universal Sunnah Foundation brags that under Muhammads battlefield leadership, Islam spread an average of 317 square miles per day.Right now ISIS, al Qaeda, Boko Haram, and the Supreme Leader of Iran know that Islam toppled two of the biggest superpowers in historyRome and Persiathen took over two-thirds of the inhabited world. Militant Muslims believe that Islam is on the brink of doing it again. The Muhammad Code: How a Desert Prophet Brought You ISIS, al Qaeda, and Boko Haram lays bare the origins of this profoundly dangerous belief. Many contemporary thinkers excuse Islamic violence as a legitimate reaction to Western imperialism. They blame Americas wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the establishment of Israel in 1948. But Jihad was invented in 624 AD by the only prophet ever to call himself The Prophet of War. And that prophet was not responding to legitimate grievances, but an ambition for world conquest.

Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, and Adolf Hitler tried to take over the world. All of them failed. Yet an illiterate desert prophet and his followers hammered together an empire eleven times the size of the conquests of Alexander the Great, five times the size of the Roman Empire, and seven times the size of the United States. The biggest empire in history. How did Muhammad pull it off? And how does his success threaten you and me?

RIGHTEOUSNESS IN ISLAM comes from following Muhammads footsteps. And those footsteps are, alas, violent, imperialist, colonialist, sadistic, and genocidal. Muhammads story, the story at the heart of Islam, is the subject of this book.

Millions of Muslims interpret Islam as a religion of tolerance, pluralism, and peace. I have many Muslim friends. Many. And none of them follow Muhammads pattern. None of them are violent, imperialist, sadistic, and genocidal.

The Sheikh who made Dubai what it is today and who doubles as the prime minister of the United Arab Emirates named a race horse after one of my books. Bless him. The former development minister of Dubai, a current member of Dubais ruling council, now runs Dubais $33 billion sovereign real estate empire. His company built the worlds tallest building. He has gone in front of the Arabian Business and Economic Forum, of which hes a co-founder, and has told the leading businessmen of the Arab world that one of my books contains the future of Dubai. The eleventh president of India, Dr. Abdul P.J. Kalam, a Muslim, called that same book a visionary creation. When I was asked to create a two-day intensive program for business leaders called Reperceiving Leadership, that request came from one of the worlds 57 Islamic nations, Malaysia. And the ten CEOs and General Managers to whom I gave the program were all Muslims. Every one of them.

My biggest fan is a Muslim atheist who splits his time between Islamabad in Pakistan, where hes the trainer to the stars of the national cricket team, and Dubai, where hes established that citys most expensive training establishment. I wrote the promotional materials for his Dubai business when he first started it. Because I believe in him as much as he believes in me.

I not only appear regularly on Saudi and Iranian TV, but my producer at Saudi TV is dear to my heart.

One day in roughly 2000, after my howardbloom.net website had gone up, I was perplexed to discover that I was getting a steady trickle of hits from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Why was I attracting these hits? Was it because I was being stalked? No, said the man who calls himself my Muslim brother, the therapist who helped save me when I was in deep trouble from 1998 to 2002. Dont you understand, he said, there are university professors teaching in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. They cant open their mouths about their real feelings. You are speaking for them.

What does he mean? Muhammads example of murderous intolerance toward dissidents threatens all of my Muslim friends. It is the example on which the people of ISIS, al Qaeda, and Boko Haram have modeled their lives. In fact, it is their excuse for mass murder and war crimes. And that militancy kills far more Muslims than it kills Westerners.

To be blunt, I have kept the names of some of my Muslim friends out of this introduction because to reveal them in this book would threaten at the very least vicious disapproval from their families and at the most death.

But ISIS, al Qaeda, and Boko Haram are not unique. The war they wage against the worldand against the moderates in their own communityis just the latest manifestation of a violent conflict that has gone on since 623 A.D. A world war thats been in motion for nearly 1,400 years. To understand that war, and to understand the danger that my moderate Muslim friends and yours are in, you have to understand one of historys most astonishing stories. A story that has had more impact than the lives of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon combined. You have to understand the life of the one true prophet of Allah, the one true source of holiness and virtue in Islam, Muhammad.

IN THE FALL OF 2014, a Saudi fighter for the Islamic State, ISIS, in Al-Shaddadi, Syria, bought a female slave in the market, a 34-year-old Yazidi captive. He raped her over and over again. Why else do you buy a female slave? Then he purchased a second sex slave. This one was a 12-year-old girl. And suddenly the handcuffs of the Saudi fighters lust came off. Said the 34-year-old sex slave after she escaped, the ISIS fighter raped the 12-year-old youngster for days on end despite heavy bleeding.

Shes just a little girl, pleaded the 34-year-old. But the ISIS fighter answered: No. Shes not a little girl. Shes a slave. And she knows exactly how to have sex. Then he added something vital: And having sex with her pleases God. So the fighter never provided medical care. Instead, he prostrated himself on the floor next to the adolescent girls bed, prayed to Allah, then mounted the child over and over again. Each time when he was finished, he laid himself out on the floor again and prayed. We do not know the end of the story. We do not know if Allah the merciful, Allah the compassionate ever answered the prayers with healing. And, frankly, we do not know if the fighter even bothered to pray for such a thing.

This was just one of many stories told by those who managed to escape. Those who managed to slip away from the new institutions of sexual slavery that ISIS crowed proudly about in cover lines on its October 11, 2014, issue of its glossy magazine Dbiq with the proud words, The Revival of Slavery Before the Hour. Whats the Hour? Its the Muslim equivalent of Christianitys rapture, its the arrival of the day of judgement. And why was Dbiq so proud of the revival of slavery? Sexual slavery?

The leader of the Islamic State is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi was born Ibrahim al-Badri in 1971 in a city of 349,000 inhabitants, Samarra, a city 77 miles north of Baghdad with claims to holiness. You can tell which passion was dominant by the nickname pinned on him: The Believer. Baghdadi studied religious texts with zeal, began teaching children to chant the Quran as a teenager, and even in his youth bawled out those he felt were straying from the strict practices of Islam.

Baghdadi hoped to attend law school at the University of Baghdad in 1996, but his high school grades were too low. So he signed up at Baghdads Saddam University for Islamic Studies and went for a masters degree in Quranic recitation. Then he went for a doctorate. Meanwhile, Baghdadi had a mentor who had fought in the war to drive the Soviet Union out of Afghanistan, Muhammad Hardan. a wing that wanted to imitate the first forefathers of Islam, the companions of the prophet. Among other things, those companions had picked up the banner of global conquest when the Prophet died in 632 A.D. And they had conquered the core of the biggest empire in history, an empire 11 times the size of the conquests of Alexander the Great, five times the size of the Roman Empire, and seven times the size of the United States.
