The Newcastle Commercials: 16th (S) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers in the Great War: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "The Newcastle Commercials: 16th (S) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers in the Great War" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

The planning for the raising of what was to be come16th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, started within two days of the outbreak of the war. The initial efforts took on a more professional look within a month, when the Newcastle Chambers of Commerce set about raising money and aiming to raise several battalions in response to Lord Kitcheners call for men.The outcome was a Pals battalion, the 1st Newcastle Commercials.
Arriving in France at the end of 1915, the battalion, like so many others of its type, had its first experience of a major action on the Somme on 1st July 1916, in its case in the forlorn attempt to capture the German front line village of Thiepval. The outcome is well known; a disaster that ravaged the battalions ranks. However, the battalion was reinforced, reorganised and took its part in actions at Ovillers and along the Ancre as the battle grinder on over the next four and a half months.
In 1917 it was involved in the advance on the Hindenburg Line and was then transferred to the North Sea coast, with the intention of taking part in the daring plan to launch a major amphibious landing behind the German lines in the summer. This was thwarted by a masterly pre-emptive German counter stroke. By the end of the year the battalion was engaged in operations in the northern part of the Salient after the Battle of Third Ypres (Passchendaele) had formally ended. In early February 1918 the battalion was disbanded as part of a general reorganisation of the BEF, which saw divisions losing three of their twelve infantry battalions.
In outline it is a common story; but, as for all the Pals battalions, its unusual origins and its very close connection to a local area, in this case Newcastle, provides an enduring fascination for todays generation. Ian Richardson has worked extraordinarily hard to gather documents from members of the battalion - letters, diaries and recollections - as well as numerous photographs. He has prepared extensive appendices on its membership and its casualties. The outcome is a fitting tribute to these young men from Newcastle men of a century ago who, for whatever motive, answered their countrys call, all too many of whom paid for it with their lives or their health.

Newcastle Commercials

About the Author

Ian Johnson has always been a Newcastle Commercial man, starting work aged sixteen in the famous Bainbridge department store in August 1977.

Bainbridges, established in 1838, is proudly known as the very first department store in the world, and in early September 1914 during the call for volunteers for Kitcheners New Army over sixty men and boys from the store rushed to volunteer to serve King and Country.

It was Ians research of the war memorial inside the store that inspired him to produce two books, Bainbridge, Our Fallen Heroes 19141919 and 19391945, telling the stories of the forty-one men honoured on the memorial, stories that had long been forgotten.

From the research into the Great War one battalions name came up time and time again, and that was the Newcastle Commercials and the date 1 July 1916. What had happened to these men on that date? A journey of discovery began and a passionate desire to retell the story of the Newcastle Commercials.

Ian still works in retail and is proud to be a trustee of the North East War Memorials Project.

Foreword

Many people today have family memories of the war which have been handed down through the generations. The work of our schools, coupled with the power of technology to access archives, has led to increasing knowledge of the war and the part our forebears played in it.

This book is an outstanding history of the 16th Service Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers, known initially as the Newcastle Battalion one of the first volunteer battalions to be formed in answer to Kitcheners call.

Six hundred men from the battalion were killed during the war and many more were wounded. This book tells their story. It records in meticulous and impressive detail how the battalion was formed and its contribution to the war effort. It draws our attention to the outstanding contribution of so many individuals.

A visit to the Western Front is not complete without a visit to the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme. Reminders of the loss of so many men from the 16th Service Battalion are there for all to witness.

The sheer scale of their sacrifice is hard to come to terms with. We must never forget, and through Ian Johnsons book we never will.

Lord Shipley OBE

Leader of Newcastle City Council 2006 2010.

Preface

On Remembrance Sunday in November 2008, the nation witnessed a special event: the last surviving veterans of the First World War took part in the traditional parade at the Cenotaph in London. I was inspired by that event to research the names on the Bainbridge Department Store War Memorial, which is now situated in John Lewis Newcastle, where I have spent almost my entire working life.
