The original workshop on which this book is based was sponsored by the European Science Foundation (ESF) Research Networking Programme Standard Drugs Drug Standards. A Comparative Historical Study of Pharmaceuticals in the Twentieth Century (DRUGS) and the Technical University Braunschweig in Germany. We wish to thank the other members of the Biological drugs team of DRUGS who met in Paris and encouraged us to conduct the workshop on Drugs, Living Things and the Problems of Standardization at the Technical University Braunschweig in March 2010.
With one exception, the essays in this volume were originally presented at the Braunschweig workshop and have been substantially revised in light of the conference discussion. Klaus Angerer studied Cultural Studies and Spanish at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. Currently he is working on his PhD thesis on the investigation, the uses and the transformations of collected biological materials in intermediary institutions in Europe, with fieldwork undertaken especially in a natural-product company, university departments and a botanical garden. Beat Bchi is a Research Associate at the Archives of Rural History in Bern, Switzerland, where he works in a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation on the scientization and industrialization of agriculture, especially on the history of cattle breeding since the mid-nineteenth century. He has published in the history of technology, the history of medicine and the history of knowledge. Among his publications are Vitamin C fr alle! Sven Bergmann is a Post-Doctoral Researcher currently working at the Institute for the History of Medicine, Charit Berlin, in a research group about cultures of madness. He holds a PhD in European Ethnology and has worked on medical mobilities, kinship and reproductive technologies.
