An Epic Beginning
A
re you a Fortnite fanatic? Or maybe youve
heard about the game from your friends, but
you havent tried it out for yourself yet. Either
way, it is impossible to avoid the fast-paced online
game that has become a worldwide sensation.
Sometimes it might even seem like everyone you
know is playing, watching, or talking about Fortnite .
If youve played Fortnite , you probably know
exactly why this game has become so popular.
Creating a modern video game can take a very
long time, even for an experienced and skilled
development team.
More than 200 million people around the world have
downloaded the game so far, and it is only continu
ing to grow in popularity. Music and movie stars play
Fortnite . Late-night TV hosts talk about it on their
shows. Professional Fortnite streamers have become
major celebrities in their own right.
How did Fortnite get so popular? Where did this
remarkably successful game come from? To many
people, it seemed to pop up almost overnight, out of
nowhere. But this couldnt be further from the truth.
A dedicated team of talented game developers has
been working hard on Fortnite for many years. The
game everyone is enjoying today is the product of
these developers time, effort, and creativity.
Fortnite was created by a company called Epic
Games. Epics history dates back to the early 1990s. It
was founded by computer programmer Tim Sweeney,
who had taught himself to write code and created his
own homemade computer games as a kid. At first,
the company was called Potomac Computer Systems.
Later, it was renamed Epic MegaGames, which was
eventually shortened to Epic Games.
Video game fans are used to seeing the Epic
Games logo when they launch many of their
favorite games.
Today, the Unreal Engine is free for anyone to use.
If youre interested in video game development,
give it a try for yourself.
Epic created several games during the 1990s, but
the company had a major breakthrough in 1998. That
year, it released a game called Unreal . Unreal was a
first-person shooter set on an alien world. The game
quickly became famous for its impressive 3D graphics.
Other game developers were so impressed with
the graphics technology Epic had created for Unreal
that they wanted to use it in their own games. Many
companies began paying Epic to use its game engine .
Over the years, Epic has continued to make new Unreal
games while constantly improving the Unreal Engine.
The Unreal Engine has been used to create countless
games. It remains an important tool for game develop
ers even today.
Epic had another major success in 2006, when it
released Gears of War for the Xbox 360. Like Unreal ,
Gears of War was a shooter that received a lot of atten
tion for its incredible graphics and fun gameplay. The
game launched an extremely popular series that con
tinues today. However, Epic no longer makes the latest
Gears of War games.

In 2011, the developers at Epic had just finished
their latest game, Gears of War 3 . After three Gears
games, they wanted to try something new for their
next project. Many of them had been playing build
ing games such as Minecraft , which was starting to
become a huge hit around this time. They started to
think about ways to combine the scavenging and
building of Minecraft with their expertise in shooting
games.
Almost right away, the developers at Epic knew
they were on to something. Just a few weeks after
coming up with the basic idea for their project, they
created a trailer and showed it at the 2011 Spike Video
Game Awards. This short video, only about a minute
long, was video game fans first introduction
to Fortnite .
At this point, there wasnt really much for the
developers to say about their game. They had barely
begun working on it! For several years after the first
trailer, they quietly worked on the game without
revealing new information to the public. At the same
time, they worked on another Gears of War game,
which released in 2013, and fans began to wonder
what was going on with Fortnite .
To people on the outside, it might have seemed
like Fortnite had disappeared. But this was not the case
at all. Creating a video game from a brand-new idea
is a lot more work than creating a sequel to a proven
formula. Epic had to make a lot of decisions about
what kind of game Fortnite would become. Developers
knew that it would involve building bases and fighting
enemies. They also knew that they wanted to create a
game that would keep people playing for a long time.
But even with a general plan in place, they had to try

It Takes Teamwork
A lot of hard work goes into creating any video game, no matter how simple it might
seem when you are playing it. It takes many people to create a big, complex game like
Fortnite . Each member of the development team usually specializes in a different aspect
of game creation. There are artists who sketch out designs for the characters, weapons,
and other things you see in the game. There are 3D modelers who turn those designs
into computer graphics. Programmers write code to tell a computer how to run the game.
Composers create music for the game. Interface designers create menus that are easy
to navigate. Testers help find potential problems with the game so they can be fixed.
These are just a few of the potential jobs someone might have on a game
development team. Different games all require different things. Some teams are small,
while others might consist of hundreds of people. If youre considering becoming a game
developer, think about which aspects of games are most interesting to you. At many
