This book sprang unexpectedly to life in 2012 during a research trip to the William L. Clements Library, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. My first book, Wellingtons Wars , had just been published, and I had decided to focus my research on how lessons had been learned by the British Army during the American Revolutionary War and applied during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. At most, I expected to produce an article. Whilst in Ann Arbor, Dr Brian Dunnigan, then curator of the extensive map collection at the Clements, pointed me to the recently acquired papers of Sir Eyre Coote. Amongst the many orderly books, journals and memoranda, I found the quote that brilliantly encapsulated for me the character of the British Army in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and furnished me with the title for this book.
