To my father, my Ole Sox, my orchestra, and the man who was always there for us. As a father, I now realize the incredible gift he gave to me. Dad, for the good times we spent at Ebbets Field when I was a boy; for the difficult times in my training; for your faith in me as a young man; for the times I still feel your presence in my life today; for the love and respect you taught us in the way that you loved our mother... thank you.
To Joe Van Der Muelen, M.D., my professor, my mentor, my conductor, the man who taught me what it was like to be a physician. Your words, Patients dont care how much you know until they know how much you care, changed my life. Like Pope John Paul II, there is no one who worked with you or whom you taught who doesnt feel blessed to have you in their lives.
To Joan Lasorda, one of the unheralded women in America. There is a reason why Tommy is so ebullient and radiates goodness; it is because of you, Joan. The relationship of mutual respect and love you and Tommy have for each other reflects the real foundation of our society. I dedicate this book to you and all women like you, including my mother and sisters, who through their altruism give life harmony.
FOREWORD
I have known Dr. Vincent Fortanasce for thirty-three years, first as a diligent resident in neurology, then as a well-respected colleague. It is with pleasure that I write the foreword to his latest book, The Anti-Alzheimers Prescription. In it, Vince has developed a novel and unique approach to delaying or preventing the effects of Alzheimers disease. If you are concerned about your personal risk of Alzheimers or the mental health of someone you love, it could make a difference.
Driven by the emotional experience of dealing with the ravages of Alzheimers disease in his own father and the problems he saw in patients in his own neurological practice, he reviewed the literature and drew from his experience to develop the Anti-Alzheimers Disease Prescription.
Few authors, if any, who have written on this subject have the broad training in neurology, psychiatry, and rehabilitation that Dr. Fortanasce has. This enables him to bring his skills to his integrated Prescription for Alzheimers Disease that works toward achieving a healthful balance of brain, mind, and body functions. His narrative emphasizes how personal experience can give a whole different emotional aspect to a clinicians impersonal impression of a disease, making the book heartwarming and personal.
Dr. Fortanasce explains his concepts in a step-by-step easily understandable style for those not familiar with medical terminology and uses numerous illustrations from his private practice. He also introduces some of the more recent concepts of the role inflammation and apoptosis, or programmed cell death, may have in the etiology of the disease. His approach to sentinel risk factorssleep and stressis novel. Although Dr. Fortanasce emphasizes their role in Alzheimers disease, it is apparent that his recommendations on balancing forces in daily living with exercise, diet, reduction of stress, meditation, and avoidance of risk factors could serve as a template for anyone interested in living a long, healthy, and productive life.
Dr. Fortanasces dedication to his patients and medical ethics has been recognized nationally. He has been awarded certificates of commendation from the White House, President Clinton, Governor Pete Wilson, United States Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein; and received International Little Leagues highest honor, being inducted into the Little League Hall of Excellence with other notables such as President Bush and U.S. Senator William Bradley, for his contribution to childrens health and sports.
Joseph P. Van Der Meulen, M.D.
Joseph P. Van Der Meulen, M.D., is a past chairman of the department of neurology at the University of Southern California and Los Angeles County Hospital. He was also vice president for Health Affairs at USC, interim dean of the School of Medicine, and Dr. Fortanasces mentor.
PREFACE
The fact that you are reading this book suggests you are concerned about your memory and your risk of Alzheimers disease. You are not alone, especially if youre a baby boomer rapidly approaching retirement years, or youre over sixty-five and seeing your contemporaries or even your spouse declining before your eyes.
I wrote this book because I know that Alzheimers disease can be prevented for most people and delayed in those who are genetically predisposed. Im interested not only in the health of your brain, but also of your body and spirit. I want to show you how taking care of yourself today will keep your brain sharp and you independent for the rest of your life. I want you to recognize the harmful behaviors (risk factors) that are a threat to your brain, causing it to prematurely age, and how to change those behaviors. I want you to learn the four steps you can take to decrease the chances that youll get Alzheimers disease, including dietary changes, exercises, brain boosters, and relaxation techniques.
