Dubrovniks city walls, up to 6 m (20 ft) thick and 22 m (72 ft) high, are a stunning sight. A cradle of stone, they helped protect one of Europes most perfectly preserved medieval cities, as well as safeguarding the independence of the city-state for centuries. Running from the steep cliffs in the north to the Adriatic in the south, they proved impenetrable to pirates and potential conquerors until the keys were handed to the French on 31 January 1808, and the Republic of Dubrovnik (or Ragusa, its former name) ended.

- , outside the southern walls, is a bar worth seeking out for drinks and great views. From the Jesuit Church, follow the cold drinks sign.
- The walls can be very crowded in summer, so arrive early to avoid the queues. Carry plenty of water, as refreshment opportunities are limited.

This entrance to the Old City leads, via a drawbridge, down on to the Stradun. Look out for the figure of Dubrovniks patron saint, St Blaise, above the gate and, a little further on, a more modern depiction of him by Ivan Metrovi.

North of the Pile Gate, steep steps lead up to an impressive fort. Views at sunset from this 15th-century bastion justify the exertion to reach it.

The bridge leading to the Ploe Gate, on the eastern walls, offers new arrivals tantalizing glimpses of the city and the old port.

Near the eastern walls, this 16th-century fortress is used for exhibitions, plus music and dancing in summer.

This Renaissance fort, designed by Michelozzo Michelozzi, watches over the citys original port. From here, the Lovrijenac Fortress is visible across the water.

Overlooking the port, this 13th-century fortification is a semicircular bastion where sea-facing cannons were housed. Part of the fortress is now occupied by a restaurant and bar.

Part of St Johns Fortress is a museum (for further details see ) that sheds light on the Republic of Ragusas rich and eclectic maritime heritage. The exhibits include a large collection of model ships, sepia photographs of the port and historic maps.

For a completely different perspective of Dubrovniks walls, join a tour boat or hire a local water taxi (both leave from the old port) and skirt around the base of the city, where the Adriatic swishes against the rocks and the ramparts soar menacingly upward.
