NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SINGAPORE

The colonial splendor of the National Museum, unveiled on Queen Victorias Golden Jubilee in 1887, reflects the British empire at its most confident. Following Singapores independence in 1965, the building was developed as a monument to the countrys history and culture. The rear of the museum is a modern wing, its glass and steel offering a striking contrast to the original, restored building. Singapores story is told largely using interactive exhibits.

The museum was built to Sir Henry McCallums design in 1887. The Neo-Palladian architecture was joined in 2006 by a stunning Modernist structure by local W Architects that more than doubled the size of the building.

THE ROTUNDA DOME

The National Museums most iconic architectural feature is the Rotunda Dome. Between 2004 and 2005, all 50 pieces of stained glass were removed from the dome and carefully restored, a lengthy and painstaking process. The final effect is stunning. On a clear day, the sun filtering through the Victorian floraland square patterns throws a ring of pretty colored lights on the floor.
