INTRODUCTION
Growing up as the oldest child born into a family of travelers I never felt - photo 12
Growing up as the oldest child born into a family of travelers, I
never felt settledI expected, as soon as I was old enough, to
find a road map to the stars and take off, skipping around the
world. My grandparents on both sides always had those travel
maps stretched across the walls. Full of colorful pins, each told
stories of destinations known and unknown.
At the age of seven, I discovered my own travel maps of sorts in
the pages of the magazines I found at the bottom of my mothers
wardrobe one afternoon. Those pages transported me to dream
worlds that I wanted so much to be a part of my everyday life.
The late afternoon perusals that followed jump-started a style
obsession that has become a lifelong study. Many years and a
couple hundred pounds of
Vogue
later, my studio is an explo-
sion of color, fabrics, and editorial photo ideas. The images I
return to over and over represent a global style, one that is
influenced by different cultures and an array of destinations.
As a wayfaring girl with a love of fashion, travel has become my
vehicle for style exploration.
Have you ever played that childhood game where you spin the
globe, eyes closed, and decide that wherever it stops will be
your future destination? Once I was old enough to choose my
own destiny, I decided to make that game my realityto turn
my wanderlust into an opportunity to explore my deep ado-
ration of style and the world at large. I wanted to live like a
modern bohemian with a mindset of artistic survival: always on
the hunt for the next destination for inspiration, the next tour,
the next show.
I have always looked to bohemians, flower children, and artists
for travel and style inspiration: What are their favorite lunch-
counter dives and vintage shops? Where are the musicians late-
night dancing after the last encore? And most importantly, what
are they wearing while they do it?
A few years ago, I took off to spend the summer traveling.
To prepare, I did research using standard travel books, maga-
zines, and lots of Google searching for travel blog posts on my
intended destinations. I tried the usual suspects, of course
Lonely Planet
,
Frommers
,
Cond Nast Traveler
and there is
certainly a reason for the success of these publications. People
want the tips, and they want the lists of the best restaurants and
bars, museums to visit, and tours to take. However, I wanted to

experience a deeper, more authentic connection to each locale

decided to write my own.
This book is meant to be the BFFs guide to the best, and most
fashionable, American road trips ever. Throughout nine routes
in locales by the sea, in the desert, and in the forest, this fash-
