Work. Sleep. Fitness. Family. Friends. Pick Three.

In an increasingly demanding world, weve been told that we can do everythingmaintain friendships, devote ourselves to work, spend time with family, stay fit, and get enough sleep. We just need to learn to balance it all. Randi Zuckerberg doesnt believe in being well-balanced. We cant do it all every day, she contends, and trying to do so only leaves us frustrated and feeling inadequate. But we can succeed if we Pick Three.

Randi first introduced the concept of Pick Three in a tweetThe Entrepreneurs Dilemmathat went viral. Now, in this book, she expands on her philosophy and inspires others to follow her lead. From entrepreneurs to professionals, busy parents to students, Randi can help everyone learn to reject the unrealistic burden of balance and enjoy success in their own livesby picking the most important areas to focus on in any given day.

This practical handbook includes stories from Randis career learning that theres no such thing as a perfect balanceas well as insights and examples from other professionals at the top of the biggest businesses in Silicon Valley, new moms searching for permission to focus on family, and recent graduates convinced they should have it all under control, including Arianna Huffington, Reshma Saujani, Laurie Hernandez, and Brad Takei. We cant have it all every day, and thats okay, Randi reminds us. Pick Three is her much-needed guide to learning to embrace the well-lopsided life.

A special thanks to Lisa Sharkey, my partner-in-crime, social media mastermind, and creative muse on three books now, and to Alieza Schvimer, my editor extraordinaire, for nudging me along in that special way editors nudge writers when she really wanted me to pick writing this book in my daily Pick Three. Thanks also go to: Lynn Grady, Anna Montague, Ben Steinberg, Kendra Newton, Heidi Richter, Serena Wang, Renata De Oliveira, and Mumtaz Mustafa.

SLEEP: Thank you to Andrew Blauner, my literary agentI sleep better at night knowing that I have the most caring, intelligent agent in publishing on my side.

FAMILY: A world of gratitude to my husband Brent Tworetzky, who has now put up with me as a writing hermit for way more books than he ever bargained for. To my sons Asher and Simi who inspire me every single day. To my in-laws, Marla and Eron Tworetzky, for staying up all hours of the night to help me copyedit this manuscript. And to my own mother, Karen Zuckerberg, for being so brave and authentic in allowing me to interview her for this book.

I laughed, I cried, I learned a ton. Thank you!

MY PICK THREE

TILL THE END OF TIME.

When we experience drastic change and disruption in our lives; having a close relationship with family can help us through that.

DOREEN ARCUS, RELATIONSHIP AND FAMILY EXPERT AT UMASS LOWELL

Family is wonderful, difficult, necessary, and extremely complicated. Some of us are born into a family, others create or choose our family. Whatever family means to you, the dynamics are still thereblissful, aggravating, dependable, stressful, warts and all.

Being part of the Zuckerberg family is all of the above. No matter which Pick Three I choose, Family always chooses me. Thats what happens when the surname you were born to becomes a defining part of your identity. (The name Zuckerberg is German for sugar mountain, which I guess explains my endless sweet tooth and love of dessert.) There are almost seven thousand people with the last name Zuckerberg in the world, and who wouldve thought that our little family (okay, not so little; I have three siblings, and now among us we have five children) would have become the most famous of them all?

On one hand, I am so seriously lucky on so many levels. I grew up with two incredibly loving parents who are still married, love their children, and support our dreams. My parents drove for hours to attend every a cappella concert I was ever in, no matter how far away. Doing so set the precedent that, no matter what, we show up for one another. This unconditional bond has been fostered now in my own family, as my husband and I recently flew across the country for only four hours to attend my sisters thirtieth birthday party. Its followed me to different countries, like the time I left Australia for the day to attend my brothers commencement speech at Harvard University, only to turn around and fly back Down Under hours later. Mark even once left a meeting with President Obama early so he could catch my Broadway debut. My parents instilled in us a value that #FamilyShowsUp, and its something I hope every single day I can instill in my own sons.

To top it all off, I feel lucky every day to have met such an incredible man, husband, and father, who continually inspires me by how much he puts our own family first in his life and goes out of his way to include both our parents in everything. He truly carries in him the same values my own family instilled in me.

And it goes without saying that I am simply lucky, blessed, honored (you name it) beyond words to have had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of being on the front lines of Facebook, being witness to my brothers meteoric rise, seeing the name Zuckerberg become synonymous with innovation and industry. To hold a name as recognized and respected as Rockefeller or Winfrey is simply amazing. Every day I still pinch myself.
