The all-new, expanded follow-up to southwestern British Columbias best-selling hiking guidebooknow featuring trails on the islands and northern Washington.

For nearly fifty years, David and Mary Macarees iconic 103 Hikes in Southwestern British Columbia has been the provinces most popular and most trusted hiking guide, with more than 100,000 copies sold to date. Author Stephen Hui carries on the Macarees legacy in 105 Hikes in and around Southwestern British Columbiaan all-new, expanded follow-up inspired by their beloved classic.

With an additional selection of trails on the Gulf Islands and in Washingtons North Cascades, options for hiking with children, and rainy day recommendations, 105 Hikes covers a wider area and wider range of abilities than its predecessor. Like the Macarees, Hui provides detailed information about how to get to each trailhead (including transit options, where available), distance and elevation gains, estimated hiking times, and points of natural or historical interest. But he also includes all-new features such as an at-a-glance summary of all the hikes in the book; tips for hiking safely and ethically; clear, topographical color maps; a rating system for hike quality and difficulty; Indigenous place names where appropriate; and shorter or longer options for every outing.

FOREWORD

by TuyttanatCease Wyss Chexw men wa ha7lh Hello you are well Chet - photo 8

by TuyttanatCease Wyss

Chexw men wa ha7lh?

Hello, you are well?

Chet kwenmantmi-wit, wa lhtma swlhayalkalh!

We invite you to our cultural places, where the water runs over anything (falls, rapids, stones in the mountain streams)!

Chet kwen ha7lh swlwen!

Our hearts are lifted!

THE SWXW7MESH PEOPLE, the Sttimc, and the many tribes of the St:lStsailes, Skwah, Cheam, Skowlitz, Nicomen, Seabird Island, Kweykwitlem, Katzie, Kwantlen, Sllutulth, and Xwmtskwiyam, to name a feware among the Coast Salish nations whose lands and waters you are blessed to be travelling through. North along the Sunshine Coast and over to the south end of Vancouver Island are the Shish7lh, Slhaymin, Snanymexw, Sooke, Sximlhalh, Tsalhlhtxw, and Quwutsn peoples. South of the border are the Nooksack, Sumas, and Lhaqtemish peoples, among others.

We love our sacred ststse, our forests, and we hope you love them too. These forests and smnit, these mountains, are the places where we have gathered s7lhen (foods), kytltanay (medicines), materials for our cultural regalia, and tools for creating the important treasures that we spent centuries learning about. We are people of the forests, lakes, and rivers, and, of course, we are people of the Salish Sea.

Our hope, as Indigenous peoples, is that through your time in our ancestors homes in the natural world, you will become as deeply connected to these wonderful and beautiful places that have cared for our peoplesas we have, hopefully, cared for them. We trust that you will find your personal healing journey along the rivers, trails, watersheds, and estuaries that you visit and that you will find caring ways to help these sacred places continue to exist for all of our future ancestors!

Huy chexw a for taking the time to consider where you are and what your intentions and your relationships to these wild places are! Please remember to bring only what you need and want, and understand that the wild places need nurturing as much as we do. Please consider helping the forest to stay clean and loved as you make your way through the many trails you find in this book.

Our forests are filled with rich and wondrous stories of everythingfrom lesson stories, which we tell our children to keep them self-aware, to humorous and serious stories that are a reflection of our ancestors stories from long ago. The mythical creatures who helped us to shape these mountains and valleys are very much still present.

Huy chexw a for your good feelings and positive actions in realizing that you are part of the journey through these places. You are as important to us as the forest is to you.

Huy ma7lh!
