My family has encouraged me all along, beginning when my father, Joseph B.
Brown, took me for springtime walks in the woods when I was five years old.
Although he called this "hunting for mushrooms," we were actually hiking. Later,
my sister, Judy Brown, would often join me on hikes over many state park trails. In
many ways, my mother, Hazel E. Brown, has also helped to make this book pos
sible, as have my four adult sons, Brian, Mark, Bruce, and Matt McKinney.
