FOREWORD Qi Gong is a healing movement meditation, derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine , that has been practiced for over two thousand years.
The term "Qi Gong" means to work with energy. The practice offers a sequence of movements that train the mind to lead energy smoothly and effectively throughout the body. Why is energy flow essential? Eastern medicine views the body as an integral system, in which each part affects the whole. Disease originates from disharmony, a blockage or imbalance in the flow of energy through our bodies, that festers and produces symptoms. Treating symptoms alone proves ineffective because such treatment dose not restore equilibrium in the body. All systems need to work in harmony in order for us to flourish.
By stimulating the right pathways and removing blockages, Qi Gong regenerates a healthy energy flow, and helps nourish and heal our entire being.
Qi Gong regulates breath, body, and mind. It supports the immune system, strengthens the body, and encourages hormone production, keeping us young, vital and supple.
The benefits extend far beyond our physical health. Through Qi Gong, we learn how to utilize our energy efficiently, take responsibility for our life choices, and alleviate the mental causes of physical illness. By developing stewardship over our energy flow, we can seize control of our narrative and rewrite our life story. The gift of life, can be greatly enhanced when we integrate a practice of movement and meditation into our daily routine.
This Manual presents knowledge that has been passed through Qi Gong masters for thousands of years.
Master Zi has dedicated many years to the practice, research and study of Qi Gong, as well as other classic modalities such as Taoism and Vedic sciences. Over the ages, these great disciplines have proven to transform our quality of life and mitigate suffering. Master Zi refers to the consistent life practice and its benefits as The Physics of Devotion. We practice under the premise that every act is sacred. With deliberate movement we refine our body and honor our soul. "Breathe" explains both the theory and practice of Qi Gong in simple, accessible terms, it lays the foundation for a more fulfilling and vital existence.
With proper commitment and effort, you will embark on a remarkable journey.
THE PURPOSE OF QI GONG Each day, we awaken to a world of challenges: family, career, physical health, and mental wellbeing. Though these challenges at times overwhelm, with the right tools we can negotiate and overcome our difficulties. Qi Gong provides us with a set of skills. When practiced with sincerity and devotion, Qi Gong salutations, cultivate the vital energy that rebuilds, renews and maintains us through the inevitable trials of life. We can emerge from these challenges better, stronger, more capable, more resilient, more at peace with ourselves.
We often associate dissatisfaction with circumstance, and believe that if only our problems disappeared, we would be happier. Yet our life emerges from our experience, and our experience depends on our internal conditions, mindset and perception. Instead of waiting for external change, Qi Gong gently cultivates change from within. Happiness flows from our ability to accept life's challenges, resolve our problems, and continue to move forward. Qi Gong practice is a journey that guides us towards realizing our potential, through greater awareness of our body, our mind, and our interactions with the world around us. Along the way we slowly unravel blockages, address and heal both mental and physical ailments.
A sincere practice will help us relinquish old habits, develop and sustain a new way of being. Happiness is a journey not a destination, Work like you dont need money, Love like you have never been hurt, And dance like no one is looking ~ Gautama Buddha
The contemporary lifestyle creates stress because it conditions us to strive for more. More stimulation, more information, more consumption. Unsatisfied with what is, our thoughts perpetually race ahead to the next task, the next high and we lose the ability to stay present, never fully experiencing anything. Our systems simply cannot process the volume of stimulation that we consume. Constantly pursuing the next goal, or deal, might enhance our resume, but will hinder personal relationships and eventually affect our health.
Our competitive culture and focus on consumption exhausts us and leads to chronic conditions. Nowhere in life is rest rewarded. We consider it idle, equate it with laziness. We are expected to keep going, giving and performing, without being taught how to recharge and restore our energy. We exploit our system and cause fatigue, work without pause depletes our energy. Symptoms of exhaustion include impatience, restlessness, and nervousness.
Recharging requires more than sufficient sleep, it applies to all aspects of our lives: thoughts, actions, and nourishment. We rest the mind by clearing limiting notions and negativity. We recharge the body through proper exercise and nutrition. A consistent moderate exercise routine provides more benefits in the long run than excessive workouts. Eating foods that are right for us enables effective absorption of nutrients. We tend to burden our body with unnecessary toxins.
Fighting and eliminating these substances consumes resources that would otherwise rejuvenate us. The secret to good health and a happy life is taking the time to recharge. When we slow down we become fully present, embrace life experiences and find joy in the moment.
In order to fully relax body and mind, one must strip away layers of mental restrictions caused by social conditioning, domestication, and
trauma, which limit full expression of ourselves. We observe and imitate those around us, assume their attitudes and belief systems. This affects how we perceive ourselves, and defines our reality. Our thoughts and feelings serve as instructions, a blueprint that creates our physical existence.
Self-criticism, guilt, and entitlement, all rampant in our society, induce stress symptoms like high blood pressure and a fast heart beat. While positive thoughts, such as gratitude, boost endorphin levels, which reduces stress and pain. Further, past experiences shape our posture and body language. Memories of old injuries and trauma accumulate in the body and manifest physical symptoms. The physical and emotional distress we experience creates mental blocks that impede communication between body and mind. In order to heal we must re-prioritize, rest and recharge.
