You will also notice in this book that each sign has several recurring aspects. A sign has a gender (male or female) and an element (water, fire, air, or earth). Water and earth signs are considered female, and air and fire signs are considered male. In addition to its element, each sign is categorized as one of three qualities: cardinal, fixed, or mutable. The cardinal signs begin each season; the fixed signs occur at the height of the season; and the mutable signs signal the change of one season to the next. Finally, each sign has a ruling planet that exemplifies the characteristics of the sign.

The two planets linked to friendship are Venus and Jupiter. Venus, or Aphrodite in ancient Greek mythology, is the goddess of love and inspires how you feel toward others. Jupiter, or Zeus, is the chief god of Roman and Greek mythology, and inspires how you show your emotions.
