Writing is a solitary business but at the same time one is never alone as the chapters take shape and the finished work eventually emerges. Star Babies has experienced a rather protracted birth, during which I have been extremely grateful to a first class midwifery team. First of all, heartfelt thanks to my agent, Vanessa Holt, and to Susie Dunlop and her team at Allison & Busby. I am also most appreciative of the wisdom and guidance of Deryn Lake and Georgina Jones, with whom I spent a memorable evening and who started me on this venture. In addition, Maureen Woolletts supportive friendship, wicked sense of humour and (in true Sagittarian style) honest comments about my tendency to procrastinate definitely kept the project moving forward. Thank you, too, to Annette Shaw who volunteered the title when she commissioned a short article on babies and their sun signs. Last, but by no means least, my thanks to my children for so kindly producing the grandchildren who have given me both enormous pleasure and much food for thought about astrological parent/child relationships. Labours of love indeed!

Introduction
Some years ago I took part in a local radio stations weekly phone-in on astrological relationships. Whilst many of the questions concerned adult partnerships, there was always one query along the lines of were thinking of starting a family: which star sign would be the most compatible for us? Whilst it is a strange phenomenon, but an astrological truth, that a babys own horoscope, whenever it is born, invariably has significant links with the birth charts of its parents, that is not to say an immediate rapport will instantly develop. My interest in the relationship between parent and child was particularly rekindled when my Cancerian daughter, about to give birth to an Aquarian, wondered how she would get along with her firstborn. She realised she didnt have any close Aquarian friends and usually found the sign rather cool and unapproachable. Instinctively she had picked up on the difficulties surrounding any relationship between the over-sensitive, emotional Cancer and the logical, sometimes rather aloof Aquarius and was keen to understand how she could avoid any pitfalls that could mar the mother/baby bond. Most mothers are fortunate enough to form an amazingly deep connection with their baby at birth, but a true appreciation of the similarities that will unite, and the differences that will require patience, perception and tolerance to overcome, can only enhance those strong protective ties.
We all love our children, but whether we really know them or, from time to time even like them, is a totally different matter. Every Sun sign has the ability to get along with every other. Some find it very easy to establish an immediate rapport; others struggle to find common ground and to value each others qualities. A little knowledge of astrological characteristics can make a huge and beneficial difference to family harmony.
With two or more children born to the same parents there is a good probability that love, hate, indifference and all emotions in between will go into the melting pot. My four children are all very different and each connects with the other siblings in a unique and special way. That does not mean it is, or has been, all sweetness and light! In all families rivalry, or a total unwillingness to understand a sister or brothers way of thinking or behaving, can put a temporary (or sometimes permanent) blight on the relationship. Learning to appreciate the others qualities rather than fret about the differences can often haul a potentially stressful sibling relationship from the brink.
Once I started to think about the early interaction between parent and child and between siblings, I also remembered how differently my own children had developed in their first five years. Each astrological sign has its innate gifts and talents, which will develop quickly and easily, and its more challenging characteristics that will take time to encourage or tame. By the time the five-year-olds reach the school gates they have more or less attained the same goals, albeit by somewhat different routes, and the birth sign could have a lot to do with it. Much worry can frequently be alleviated if it is accepted, for example, that Geminis are likely to master words and movement quickly but Taureans will win hands down when it comes to creating masterpieces in the sandpit. As for the Piscean ability to hold a tune and tap to the rhythm, Handel, Chopin and Rimsky Korsakov are testament to that!
I hope this book will not only be informative but also help you to enjoy your relationship with the youngest members of the family and their own alliances within the home. If it can also throw a new light on your childs development, allowing you to take pride in his or her talents and, equally, not to worry too much if other milestones take longer to achieve, then I have answered not only one Cancerians questions but perhaps those from every member of the zodiacs family.

AstrologicalNote
There can be a slight variance from year to year in the day the Sun changes from one sign to the next, usually more in the way of hours rather than days. However, those few hours can be very significant and if you have a child born on any of the following dates, it could be very helpful to read both the birth sign and the next-door sign. If you are in doubt as to whether your son or daughter is one sign or another, the characteristics and, more importantly, the relationship sections, could make it all much clearer.
