So youre an entrepreneur. Youre regarded by others as the crazy one, the explorer who ventures into uncharted territory. You have the ability to see an opportunity to improve something, while others see only whats broken or missing. You disrupt and shake up the status quo.
Congratulations! Who wouldnt want to be you? You get to set your own office hours and dress code, and design and decorate your own office space. Youre accountable to no one.
Best of all, you get to make lots and lots of money. Pretty coolright?
Not so fast. If youre an entrepreneur, youre different, and that may jeopardize your financial well - being . If youre like most entrepreneurs, youre willing to live on the edge of bankruptcy to feed your vision.
I was delighted when Wayne invited me to be part of his book. We have known each other for years and share a common sense of purpose and passion for bringing a higher level of integrity and professionalism to the financial services industry. (In addition, we both have ties to Hanover, Pennsylvania.)
For more than three decades, I have focused on advancing the subject of fiduciary responsibility and developing standards for prudent moral and ethical decision making. In 2007, I formed the company 3ethos and began to study the leadership and stewardship behaviors that define the attributes of a trusted financial adviser serving in a fiduciary capacity. More recently, we added to our fiduciary framework groundbreaking research on neuro - leadership . This research identifies the neurological markers (hotspots in the brain) of exemplary leaders. Youll read more about our efforts in this book.
Our research is in behavioral behavioral governancedefined as the interrelationship between leadership, stewardship, and governance. As it relates to Waynes work, we believe behavioral governance provides helpful insights in understanding the challenges associated with nudging entrepreneurs to consider their financial well - being . As Wayne points out, thats where an integrative financial adviser can help.
If youre an entrepreneur, youre wired differently. These differences contribute to your success, but they can also contribute to your downfall financially. You need to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the fact that financial well - being has a direct impact on your vision. Taking a famous line from the movie The Right Stuff No bucks, no Buck Rogers.
When it comes to choosing the right adviser, youre in good hands with Waynes guidance. His book arms you with everything you need to know. The next step is up to you.
Don Trone, L5, GFS, CEO, 3ethos
Life moves at warp speed for most entrepreneurs, and if youre like many of my clients, you face challenges on a regular basis. Common everyday pains include the following:
- Your spouse doesnt understand your business decisions. Perhaps she or he believes your choices are too risky, when in fact, you are trying to capitalize on opportunities, such as the chance to buy your building at far below its value from a motivated seller.
- You struggle with not knowing what your responsibility is to your employees and what is best for them. Youd like to help them save for retirement, but youre uncertain how far you should go to be impactful.
- You feel overwhelmed by business growth and lost when it comes to the tension of bringing in sufficient profits and minimizing taxes. You may feel as if you receive a lack of comprehensive advice from your CPA. Meanwhile, your spouse might be pressuring you to sell the business because it takes all your time.
I understand these challenges because Ive experienced them myself as an entrepreneur. I know what it feels like to leave behind a steady paycheck and work in a tiny office where youre the one paying for the office supplies and the electricity. I know the pressure of having your family dependent on your venture succeeding. As an entrepreneur, Ive found ways to scale and manage wealth using prudent investment strategies. Ive minimized my tax burden to the highest extent possible. As of this writing, Ive worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs and their families, successfully helping them manage their wealth and plan wisely for the future.
Every entrepreneur lives, breathes, and eats his or her business, and I understand that perfectly because I come from an entrepreneurial family. My dad owned a Cadillac/Oldsmobile dealership when I was growing up. He worked at least seventy hours a week, every day but Sunday, often not returning home until late at night. When I was younger, Id go out to breakfast with my dad every Saturday at the Sunnyside Diner in Hanover, Pennsylvania. That was my big day with him because of his schedule. I began working for my dad when I was eight years old. I started off in his dealership washing carsover the years I washed thousands of them. I swept the body shop and became a mechanics apprentice. I became a salesman at seventeen; later, I moved into the finance and insurance department, helping customers with contracts. Eventually, I became sales manager and then general manager.
