Dozens of landformssuch as Zoroaster, Shiva Temple, and Freya Castlerise up from Grand Canyons rocky folds. These features would be singularly remarkable anywhere else.
Its rich with biological diversity. From the North Rims boreal forests to the inner canyons river and desert landscape, Grand Canyon supports more than 2,000 species of plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. The South Rim, the most visited area of Grand Canyon National Park, extends roughly 40 miles from Hermits Rest to Desert View. The Rim Trail and scenic overlooks such as Mather Point offer varying perspectives of the canyon and its maze of tributaries and monuments. Grand Canyon Village bustles with lodging, dining, shopping, and activities from mule riding to star gazing. Architect Mary Colters eccentric buildings perch along the rim, and several hikes, including historic Bright Angel Trail, lead into the canyons depths.

The North Rim, accessible spring through fall, is higher, cooler, and more remote. Only 1 in 10 park visitors travels to the North Rim, where Grand Canyon Lodge and the parks campground offer accommodations on Bright Angel Point. Scenic Cape Royal Drive leads to Point Imperial and Angels Window, with stops for picnicking and hiking along the way. Jacob Lake, the nearest town, is about 30 miles from the park entrance station.
Accessible only on foot, by mule, or by boat, the inner canyon is a treasure of buttes and monuments, hidden waterfalls, and dozens of tributary canyons, all linked by the Colorado River. On its 277-mile journey from Lees Ferry to Lake Mead, the river churns over dozens of white-water rapids. The historic oasis of Phantom Ranch offers the only lodging and dining in the canyons heart.
Outside national park boundaries, such destinations as Havasu Canyon, Grand Canyon Skywalk, and historic Lees Ferry are part of Grand Canyons story. Exploring may require a high-clearance vehicle, but those who want to escape the crowds will be rewarded with lonely vistas, rich cultural traditions, and landscapes from stark plateaus to dense forest.
