For Dave.
The famous little red and white camper van.
Who carried us so far, rarely moaned and was loved by all who sailed in him. He took us to the ends of the known world and beyond on a series of fantastic adventures that we will never forget. For a few short years of his long life we were lucky enough to be graced with Daves presence outside our house, sitting patiently, waiting for us to come sprawling out with our mess and shoes and bikes and marshmallows and dreams. He carried them all.
We shall miss him and wish him well with his new life in the North-East.
The little camper that took us to the end of the known world. If you want to know whether or not its possible to travel with 4 people in a Type 2 for 10 weeks, with surfboards, bikes, awnings, tents and snorkels, then I am happy to say it is. Very much so. Good old Dave. TV star, featured in books and magazines and loved by us.
Introduction
Thanks for finding this book.
If you own a camper, dream of owning a camper or are in the process of trying to own a camper, then this is the book for you. And if you love campers, camping, waking up to lovely views, watching the stars at night and sharing good times with friends, then its definitely for you, too. And even if you enjoy a little more than the basic luxuries on your travels, dare I say it, this is even meant for you.
Why? Because everyone loves a camper.
The camper van whether a micro camper, a rat look classic, a concourse ready show van, a stealth camper, a coach built or even an A Class is more than just a bed on wheels. Its a universal symbol for the open road, free spiritedness, love, peace and harmony that everyone and anyone can relate to even if the road ahead seems impassable sometimes.
The camper van is about getting out, off the couch and living life. Its about taking you to the places you love the most, to the places that you havent seen before or the places you yearn to see one more time before work, life and the mortgage drag you back again.
Yes, so its just a vehicle with an engine and a steering wheel.
But, if you already own one, Ill bet its got a name. Am I right? And if I am, what does it tell you about the way you feel about it and what it does for you?
Its more than just a vehicle.
I rest my case.
WHATS INSIDE
(other makes are available)
For once its okay to judge the book by its cover. The Camper Van Bible is, as the title would suggest, a book all about camper vans. Its also a book about all camper vans.
While many might think of a camper van as a classic VW Split Screen, other makes are most deflnitely available. Besides, something shiny that looks great on the concourse might not be right for you, your pocket or the way you need to travel. If it makes you happy and gets you where you want to go, who says its any better or worse than any other camper van? Not me. In my camper van-owning career I have owned a classic and three not so classic campers. Ive also made do with a few camper conversions that shouldnt have been allowed. And no, you cant make a decent camper out of a Citroen 2 CV. Trust me, I tried.
Inside this book youll find lots and lots of very useful and practical information and advice about living, eating and sleeping in all kinds of camper vans. Well talk about buying a camper, a few layouts, facilities and even a few tips to help you get a great nights sleep and to get up in the morning. If weve got it right, this will be broken up with images, illustrations and snippets of facts, figures and stuff you didnt know about living on four wheels. Weve even put together a glossary so, if you feel the need, you can talk camper vans around the campfire to your hearts content.
Id like to think that at least some of the pictures youll find between the covers will make you reach for the phone or your tablet or even to the person sitting next to you to make arrangements for your next (or first) camping trip to somewhere absolutely amazing. Ive got some ideas for that, too.
If you do feel inspired to hit the road, then dont forget to take this book with you. You might need it along the way. It might well save your life, your marriage, a little bit of face or time, or possibly even a small fortune. At the very least I promise itll get you out of a foodie fix if you run out of ideas, with a bunch of no nonsense, back to basics recipes that anyone could make and enjoy.
Ready? Lets do it.
Hot sand on toes, cold sand in sleeping bags,
Ive come to know that memories
