Welcome to Horseback Riding For Dummies! This book can be your tour guide as you navigate the exciting hobby of horseback riding.
Riding a horse is fun and relaxing, challenging and demanding, exhilarating and rewarding. As with any sport, horseback riding calls for training before you can participate safely and effectively. You probably have a sense of this already, which is why youre reading this book.
Horses are my greatest passion in life. I hope you catch horse fever, as I once did, and make horseback riding a regular part of your life. Youll find your life is never dull after you open your heart to these incredible creatures.
Horseback Riding For Dummies is designed to supplement your riding lessons and to help you understand what horseback riding is all about. You discover how to find the right instructor to teach you how to ride, what kind of gear and apparel you need, and how to get on and off the horse. You also discover the details of actually riding a horse and find out ways to expand beyond the basics when youre ready to take the next step.
This book is set up as a reference for novices in this hobby. As with all For Dummies books, you can read sections of this book individually, or you can read it from cover to cover. Either way, I hope you find the text enlightening.
I have worked hard to provide you with guidance through the sometimes complicated world of horses and horseback riding. Although you may feel overwhelmed at times as you try to negotiate the lingo, protocol, and details surrounding the horse world, I hope you refer back to this book to help you find your way.
In this book, I refer to horses with both male pronouns (he, his, and him) and female pronouns (she, hers, and her). I do so in alternating chapters to give both genders equal air time, with male pronouns in odd-numbered chapters and female pronouns in even-numbered chapters.
Throughout this book, I tell you stuff that may be interesting to know but isnt crucial to your understanding of the topic. In such cases, I place the text in a sidebar, which appears as a shaded gray box. Dont feel like you have to read these sidebars unless youre dying to sound like a better conversationalist at all those equestrian cocktail parties you go to!
In this book, I assume you can recognize a horse when you see one. Thats really about all I take for granted. Well, I do assume that youre a beginning horseback rider who wants to learn how to ride in a particular discipline (either western or English). Youre looking to get the most out of your riding lessons and instructor, and you ride a lesson horse from the stable. Or perhaps youre a more seasoned horseback rider whos looking to brush up on your riding skills and boost your confidence. You may even own a horse!
One last thing I assume is that youre no fool. I think youre pretty smart; after all, you bought this book, didnt you? And it can help guide you throughout the process of learning to ride.
As with all the other books in the For Dummies series, this book uses icons in the margins to highlight specific types of information. Heres an explanation of what each icon means:
