Whats Covered? Get to Know Provence & the French Riviera : Famed for its Lavender Route, the honey-gold hill towns of the Luberon, and vibrant cities like Aix and Marseilles, Provence was dazzlingly abstracted in geometric daubs of paint by van Gogh and C?zanne. Still haunted by the genius of van Gogh, Arles remains fiercely Proven?al and is famed for its folklore events. The spiky Alpilles mountains guard treasures like les Bauz-de-Provence: be bewitched by its ville morte (dead town) and luxurious lOustau de la Baumani?re inn. Avignon and the Vaucluse are the heart of Proven?al delights. Presided over by its medieval Palais des Papes, Avignon is an ideal gateway for exploring the nearby Roman ruins of Orange. About 10 miles east of Avignon is the Sorgue Valley, where everybody goes flea--Ing in the famous antiques market at lIsle-sur-la-Sorgue. For one day, join all those fashionable folk for whom caf? squatting, people watching, and boutique shopping are a way of life in Aix-en-Provence (one of Frances 10 richest towns). Enjoy the elegant 18th-century streets, then track the spirit of C?zanne at his famous studio and nearby Mont Ste-Victoire. Head south to become a Calanques castaway before diving into Marseille, one of Frances most vibrant and colorful cities. The French Riviera can supply the visitor with everything his heart desires--and his purse can stand. Home to sophisticated resorts beloved by billionaires, remote hill villages colonized by artists, Mediterranean beaches, and magnificent views, the C?te dAzur stretches from Marseille to Menton. Thrust out like two gigantic arms, divided by the Valley of the Var at Nice, the Alpes-Maritime peaks protect the length of that favored coast from St-Tropez to the Italian frontier. Note : This ebook edition is adapted from Fodors Provence & the French Riviera, 9th Edition but differs in some content. Additionally, the ebook edition includes photographs and maps that will appear on black-and-white devices but are optimized for devices that support full-color images.

The Alpilles, Arles, and the Camargue. Between the Rhne River delta and the hills of the Alpilles, this region has been a major crossroads since the Romans, as witnessed by the ancient arenas at Arles and Nmes and spectacular Pont du Gard aqueduct. Haunting natural beauty can be found in the Camargue but nearby are the cosmopolitan centers of feisty Latin Nmes, chic St-Rmy, and Van Goghs golden Arles.

The Vaucluse. Anchored by the medieval city stronghold of Avignon, the Vaucluse spreads luxuriantly north into the Rhne vineyards of Chteauneuf-du-Pape and east along the Lavender Route. Check out the Roman theater in Orange, then head to the Luberonthe quintessential Provenal landscapeset with magical hilltop towns like Gordes and Roussillon.

Aix, Marseille, and the Central Coast. Famous for its tree-lined boulevards, sleek, smart Aix-en-Provence has a bevy of posh cafs where you can enjoy some perfect people-watching, just like homeboy Czanne used to do. South lies MarseilleFrances second-largest citya Mediterranean melting pot as tasty as its bouillabaisse. Studded with the rocky Calanques, the nearby coast has pockets of natural beauty that could pass for an Aegean island.

The Western Cte dAzur. This is where the legend begins: palm trees, parasol pines, and sea improbably blue, all framed against the red-rock Massif de lEstrel. Theres St-Tropez, with its white-sand beaches and its port bars thick with off-duty celebs plus sportif resorts like St-Raphal. Inland, the woolly backcountry of Haute Provence headlines the Gorges du Verdon.

Nice and the Eastern Cte dAzur. A sunbelievable Shangri-la, this is the heart of the glamorous Cte dAzur. Cross the high-rises of Hong Kong with the amusement-park feel of Disneyland, add a royal touch, and there you have Monte Carloall 473 acres of it. Much nicer is Nice, thanks to its Old Towns bonbon-color palaces. Eastward lies Cannes, famed for its May film festival, and the zillion-dollar hotels of Cap dAntibes and St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Eastward hovers the sky-kissing village perch of ze, while the rainbow ends in the famous art villages: Renoirs Haut-de-Cagnes, Picassos Antibes, and Matisses St-Paul and Vence.
