Preface
When we speak of being of sound mind and body, we seldom realize that sound itself is the root of being. That sound itself is the route to acquire those things we want so much, a sound mind and body. Most of us spend our lives largely unaware of the sounds that surround us. Sound acts on our psyche and we ignore its impact. This can make us constant victims of our sound environment as the blast of a horn, the screech of a tire, the relentless pounding of a jackhammer all carry us into distraction. Even when we do take note of the sound pollutants in our environment, we often feel powerless to do anything about them. We assume that theyre the price of progress.
That doesnt need to be the case. We can consciously and creatively add sound nutrients to combat those ill effects.
Sound nutrition is the core value of the book you hold in your hand. Read it. Listen to it. View it. Think about it. There has never been a book on music and sound with so many multisensorial possibilities. These suggestions will revolutionize your life. Each individual can create his or her own sound diet to match personal needs and tastes, to get the sound mind and body he or she desires.
Don Campbell and Alex Doman offer guidelines that can literally turn on our ears and eyes, that can teach us to compose a sonically nutritious day by raising our awareness of the sound effects that tune up our lives. Here, they teach us how to maximize our good moods by using music to stimulate our optimism and increase our days creative output, as well as how to turn down the sounds that distract and deter us. As these two distinguished experts combine their up-to-the-minute knowledge, vision, and creativity, you are in capable hands as a reader and listener, creating a truly sound day from the waking moment through the working day and into the evening.
Designed to enhance creativity, this book coaxes us all to listen outside the box, to create a unique sound landscape suited to our lives and families. Written with simplicity, fine research, and clarity, this book is perfect for the neophyte, the expert, and all of us in between.
Maximize your creativity and productivity with this gold standard course in personal awareness.
Listen, listen, listen.

Appreciation to Gail Ross and the Ross Yoon Literary Agency for seeing the need for this work in todays stressful world.
We must acknowledge Dr. Alfred A. Tomatis (19202001) and the many generations he influenced with skill and creativity to help us understand the essential role of the ear in health, communication, and education.
I am indebted to my mentor and coauthor, Don Campbell, who has inspired this essential message about the transformative power of music and sound through his teaching and writing.
Deep gratitude to my grandfather, Robert J. Doman, M.D., who stimulated my fascination with the brain; to my father, Robert J. Doman Jr., who provided the opportunity to clinically investigate the applications of music to help people realize their fullest potential; and to the committed parents of the National Association for Child Development.
Special thanks to Brad Boyajian, my business partner, without whom this work would not have been possible.
I must acknowledge the amazing staff at Advanced Brain Technologies, in Ogden, Utah, who make the mission of sound and music for health happen every day. The faculty, providers, international representatives, and the countless families around the world are the core of energy that creates the positive outcome of my lifes work.
I am grateful to the musicians of the Arcangelos Chamber Ensemble and Spring Hill Music for making so many of our audio samples of such high quality.

My appreciation goes to two generations of music educators, performers, and clinicians who have encouraged me to move forward in communicating musics powerful role in society. Grace Nash, Alfred Tomatis, Norman Goldberg, Annette Dieudonn, Bill Horwedel, Mary Mayotte, and Bess Hieronymus kept me creatively searching for new ways to teach and write about music and musicians.
The Ross Yoon Literary Agency embraced my ideas for a book that would serve a new, emerging world of electronic readers. Without Gail Rosss energy and persistence, these words would not have reached this new level of readership.
I thank Helena Wald, Kerry Doutrich, Annette Ridenour, Christine Stevens, RMT, Amitra Cottrell, Sacha Millstone, Tim Shove, Nina Berger, Catherine Viel, Marc Shulgold, Shaina Harris, and Wendy Young for their research, writing, editing, and music-production contributions.
The many colleagues and friends who have pushed their work from the fringe to the frontier of musical performance, education, social justice, and spiritual depth include Ruth Cunningham, Ana Hernandez, Pat Moffit Cook, Ph.D., Carla Hannaford, Ph.D., Barbara Crowe, RMT, Barbara Reuer, RMT, Arthur Harvey, Ph.D., Dr. Susan Andrews, Chloe Goodchild, James DAngelo, Paul Madaule, Ysaye Barnwell, Ph.D., Chris Brewer, Daniel Kobialka, Michael Hopp, Christina Tourin, RMT, Sue Levine, Louise Montello, Ph.D., David Darling, Paul Winter, Jean Houston, Ph.D., Susan Osborn, Jill Purse, Jonathan Goldman, Joy Gardner, Russill Paul, Molly Scott, Ph.D., Silvia Nakkach, Susan Hale, Zacciah Blackburn, Shyla Nelson, Don Grusin, and Marie Carmichael.
I owe much gratitude for the profound knowledge of Marc Rynearson, Heather Anderson, and Janica Quach, at DMX, who have helped me realize that thousands of musical selections are ever available for our wellness and creativity.
