Croatia and Slovenia have become commonplace among glossy magazine features and lists of places to put on your travel bucket list. With sunny cities crisscrossed by winding cobblestone streets, blue gem lakes set amongst white-capped mountains, a crystalline sea, colorful festivals, great food and wine, and much more, its no wonder. Spend two weeks here and you will likely feel you need two more. For such small countries (together they cover about the size of Maine), the diversity and breadth of things to do is astounding.

Though tourists have long been frequenting Dubrovnik and Hvar and more recently discovering the charms of capital cities Zagreb and Ljubljana, there are still many places in both countries that are relatively undiscovered. Go to some of the lesser-known islands in October or to Slavonia almost any time of year and you will find yourself quite alone in terms of tourists.

Croatia and Slovenia share a past that has seen many different rulers, wars, and various foreign empiresRoman, Venetian, Austro-Hungarianthat have all added a flavorful layer to these countries. However, they have remained distinct with their own languages, customs, and cultures as different as the topography youll traverse. Drive a few hours and youll see everything from a sparkling coastline and barren-rock hinterlands to rolling hills of grapevines, thick green forests, and snow-topped mountains.

The diversity means there really is something for every sort of traveler. Hit up Istria for food and wine and truffle-hunting, Zagreb or Ljubljana for a European capital vibe with a twist, Dubrovnik for Roman and Venetian history at every turn, the islands for soaking up the sun, the mountains of Slovenia for skiing and adventure sports, or Slavonia for taking the road less traveled.

No matter how you choose to plan your trip, youre likely to leave already planning your next one. Croatia and Slovenia may be better known these days, but they havent lost the wild and wonderful quality that keeps you feeling youve truly gone somewhere special.

Where to Go
Zagreb

Croatias capital is the cultural and social heart of the country, and travelers have begun to discover the buzzing vibe of this charming city. Social life revolves around the bustling squares and streets of Lower Town (Donji Grad). For the softer side of town, head to Upper Town (Gornji Grad) with its quiet, winding cobblestone roads, stunning churches, and excellent museums. Bridging old and new is the delightful Tkalieva and Radieva streets with their boutiques and cafs. Mount Sljeme, just out of town, has hiking trails and mountain huts where you can while away an afternoon with a beer and a bowl of bean stew.

Inland Croatia

Beginning in the mountainous Gorski Kotar and stretching across Croatias long eastern arm, inland Croatia is definitely the countrys undiscovered find. The region is dotted with picturesque villages, excellent restaurants, and seoski turizam establishments, where you can sleep like a local and wake up to the roosters crow. Dont-miss destinations include the vineyards that dot the countryside, the riverside town of Osijek, and the stork-filled Lonjsko polje. The easternmost regions around Vukovar are only 20-odd years past the Homeland War, and youll find friendly people eager to show off their towns to visitors.

Istria

This tiny peninsula, wedged between Croatia and Slovenia and only a stones throw from Italy, packs a lot of punch into its small size. You can sun yourself on a rocky beach in the morning, retreat to the green hills for lunch, and finish off the day with dinner next to a rushing stream or in a seaside medieval town, depending on your mood. Istria is most famous for three things, and you shouldnt miss any of them: the Roman amphitheater in Pula, the regions wines, and its truffles. But theres more to unearth here, from almost perfect little villages like Brtonigla and Hum to a taste of faded Tito-esque grandeur in the Brijuni Islands.
