Introduction
OUR LIVES IN NEW YORK CITY HAVE ALWAYS REVOLVED AROUND FOOD: eating it, writing about it, talking about it, then eating it some more.... We believe that the best way to take a bite out of the Big Apple is to dive in and have all buttons bursting, and we have eaten our way through the boroughs, exploring exotic cuisines, undiscovered gems, and some of the top restaurants in the world. In a city with seemingly endless options for a good meal, we hope this book helps to open your eyes and bellies to new culinary experiences.

Upper East Side Where to Go for Food Amid the Fashion
A TRIP TO NEW YORK CITY IS NOT COMPLETE WITHOUT PROPER RETAIL EXPLORATION ALONG MADISON AVENUE, but if a blood sugar-induced dressing room meltdown is not on the menu, a meal should figure prominently into every shopping outing. Deciding which pair of black boots to buy is hard enough without the added pressure of figuring out where to eat, and a little planning will save your energy for those really important decisions. Carbs and couture generally don't mix, so we recommend planning ahead, trying on the most size-sensitive items before lunch, and saving the tipsy afternoon purchases for accessories. If you are more Giacometti than Givenchy, these restaurants are also in close proximity to many major museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Met Breuer, and the Guggenheim.
AMARANTH
AMARANTH is ground zero for ladies who lunch professionally, with air-kissing staff and a menu designed for small waistlines and large wallets. This the quintessential uptown eatery, with smartly dressed men and women making up the lunch scene, nannies and children in early evening, and sophisticated locals at night. The staff is always nicer to faces that they recognize, but mere mortals can have a pleasant time by making a reservation and not expecting a table up front. The slightly cramped quarters recall a bistro in Paris, but the vibe is classic Upper East Side. The menu at Amaranth is accessible and varied, with enough options so that regulars can dine several times a week and not get bored, and the staff is used to accommodating dietary requests, be they for health or personal preference. Everything is excellently prepared and fresh; the cold poached salmon will keep you in your smaller size, and the focaccia is always good for a splurge.
FREDS AT BARNEYS MADISON AVENUE
Take the elevator directly to the top floor of Barneysdo not stop for shoes on floor five, do not head to the basement for beauty products, just put your blinders on, get in that elevator and head up as high as you can. You can work off your lunch later by taking the escalator down and walking the floors, making FREDS Italian fare relatively guilt-free. Unless you want to strategically jockey for a seat at the bar, reservations are essential during prime times, and even though you might still have to wait a bit, it will make the whole experience much more pleasant. Service at Freds is passable at best, but the food makes up for it; be dainty and get the famous Marks Madison Avenue salad with Italian tuna, or be indulgent and get our favorite dish, the Emilia Romagna pizza, which features Parmesan and aged balsamic vinegar. The prices at Freds are not for the faint of heart, but compared to everything else at Barneys, they are a relative bargain.
