P assionate , innovative educator Joy Kirr penned a book that will lead positive change in classrooms around the world. Shift This! How to Implement Gradual Change for Massive Impact in Your Classroom made me feel as if I were sitting on my couch with my favorite cup of coffee chatting with this amazing educator. The conversational style of this book makes each suggestion seem immediately doable, and as I read I find myself becoming more and more energized and inspired with each passing page. Can anyone show me how to start a new website?
Oooh! I just started one at Simple Site. I can help! Nicole says. She sits down next to Erin and they work together to amplify Erins budding business with a new website.
A few desks down, Michael sits lamenting the fact that no one is buying any more fudge from his two-month-old business. Finding out that students cannot sell products at school has put a damper on his enthusiasm. He is stuck this week, not knowing where to go. I see him sitting by himself and head over with a blank sheet of paper. Write down all of your thoughts, ideas, and hopes, I whisper, placing the paper in front of him. Rather than wait for a response, I walk away to see what Alex and Ben are up to. Hopefully by writing down his thoughts, Michael will be able to take a step back and realize that his project is not doomed.
Look, Mrs. Kirr, I took Elises feedback and made the dogs ears pointier!
Yeah, and hes distracting me from my reading, Mrs. Kirr! (said with a smirk upon his face because hed rather watch Ben draw this week than read on his own). They both have two Genius Hour projects going on at one time: working on getting better at drawing and also at reading. Most of the time Alex reads more at home than at school, and Im okay with that as long as hes helping others in class instead of hindering their progress. I was glad to see Ben taking the advice from the video wed watched last week (Austins Butterfly), asking peers for feedback and making multiple drafts of the same drawing.
