ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
One of the pleasant consequences of taking a long time to write a book is an increase in the number of people who helped make possible its publication. I have benefited from the financial aid, research assistance, and scholarly advice of numerous institutions and individuals, some of whose names I have probably overlooked in the listing which follows.
A National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship got me started several years ago on what I hoped would be a simple revision and extension of my dissertation from the University of Wisconsin. Several summer grants and a semester sabbatical from the College of William and Mary kept me going. A final semester leave paid for by the Commonwealth Center for the Study of American Culture allowed me to finish the project.
Along the way, librarians at several theatre collections, including those at the New York Public Library, Brown University, the Hoblitzelle in Austin, Texas, Columbia University, and the Harvard Theatre Collection, guided me to troves of documents, pictures, programs, and scripts. Deborah Taylor, Ilona Koren-Deutsch, Monica Maillot, Alexandra Michos, and other graduate students in American Studies at William and Mary and in the Interdisciplinary Theatre program at Northwestern University also assisted my research efforts. Before I learned to fumble at word processing, Linda Williams, Phyllis Leffler, and Deborah Buchman helped me to compile early chapters of the manuscript.
