introduction
WHY CHOCOLATE?
One of the most common questions were asked is Do you really eat chocolate every day? The answer: a resounding YES! Were not talking about the mass consumption of highly processed milk chocolatewe all know typical candy bars are often filled with crappy chemical fillers. Instead, were supporting the mindful incorporation of luxuriously rich and delicious raw cacao into your dietand yes, every day! Cacao in its raw form is a health food. Period.
If you dont already, we want you to consider cacao in this light. We want to reframe chocolate so you can enjoy it the same healthful way we do. It has been more than twenty years since medical journals first claimed the potential health benefits of chocolate, and the supporting research only continues to grow.
Additionally most chocolate companies blend their roasted cocoa powder with bleached white sugars, dairy fats, emulsifiers such as soy lecithin, and processed fats like lactose and palm oils, which further negate any of the potential benefits of cacao. The end result is so far removed from the cacao bean that its hardly chocolate and essentially just a sugary treat!
Unfortunately this means most processed cocoa and the products that contain it are unreliable sources for health benefits. Dont be disheartened, though. Chocolate can be made in a different way! We take cacao in its raw, antioxidant-rich form, add organic natural sweeteners and nutrient-rich fats, and turn these ingredients into some of the most delectable treats ever, many of which mimic those commercial candy bars we once loved. We are talking about addictively delicious (in only the best way!) and nutritious chocolate foods in many forms.
While our recipes are dairy-, gluten-, and egg-free, we dont subscribe to any one way of eating. Two key factors we feel contribute greatly to a health-supportive diet are eating foods closest to their natural forms and following your bodys cues. If youre tired after eating white sugar, avoid it. If gluten makes your tummy hurt, steer clear. We have experienced firsthand that changing the way we eat, if only one whole-foods sweet treat at a time, has greatly affected our overall well-being. Eating chocolate this way, raw and combined with whole-food ingredients, makes us feel more vibrant and aliveand we want you to feel the same.
In the end, the most important thing to us is happiness. If something is healthy for you but doesnt taste good, it wont satisfy you. So weve worked hard over the years to create tasty foods that will doubly satisfy our cravings, both nutritionally and psychologically. Our storefront has served as our testing ground. If folks come back for more, we know were making something worthwhile. In these pages we share those treasured recipes for delicious treats and customer favorites.
When we say these recipes can be enjoyed without guilt, we really mean it! Theyre rich from good fats and other nutrients, so a little bit should satisfy youand go a long way. We hope you find recipes in this book that become your everyday favorites, foods that fuel you in a way that make your days great.
OUR MISSION
We believe that connecting to our highest vibration is one of the most important things we can do at this point in time. The ancient Greeks, after all, introduced us to the idea that everything is energy. Think about it like this: Every little thing on this planet contains some amount of energy within itfrom a chair to a person, there is energy in each and every thing. But some things contain more energy than others.
In regards to food, some foods contain a higher vibration, or more life force, than others. For example, kale is fresh out of the earth, it is a leafy green, and it grows up and out, which gives us the same energetic feeling when we consume it. We feel lighter when we eat kale as opposed to a Snickers bar, which has taken natural ingredients like chocolate, dairy, and nuts and processed them so much that there is very little energy left in the food. In fact, if you consider the nutritional value, Snickers is hardly a food at all, and in the long run, after we eat one we feel sluggish and tired. We are brought down by the lack of energy in that candy bar.
On the other hand, when we are aligned with our higher vibration, we are able to see and think more clearly. We experience more positive, powerful thoughts and can attract positive things to ourselves. When we are on that higher level, we have more energy, feel inspired, and are happier.
We find that when we treat our bodies with love and respectfeed them high-quality foods, exercise, meditategood things happen. We have the ability to make this choice.
Okay, but what does this have to do with Not Your Sugar Mamas (NYSM)? The intention behind starting NYSM is all of this. The idea is to put a really high-quality, nutrient-dense chocolate bar on the shelves that is also infused with good vibes to make you feel good. We believe that the energy from food infused with good vibes will actually transfer to the person eating it, and will help, even if in a really small way, to raise the vibration of that person. We try to impart this in how we do business: in the relationships we have with each other, with our employees, and with our community, both locally and globally.
