This book has become very special, as so many people have been involved in creating it; family, friends, colleagues and strangers alike. As I wrote it, I not only wanted to provide my readers with a guide book to makeup, but also to help people to achieve a greater level of confidence, love and self-esteem. Over the two-year period of putting together How to Look Beautiful Forever, I went through some very difficult times both, medically and emotionally, an experience which reinforced how important it is to have love for yourself and others. I hope my own challenges will have enabled me to create words that will resonate with my readers. During the time of writing I also fell pregnant with my second daughter, who was born in January 2013; my two beautiful daughters, Lara and Megan, light up my life every single day. Seeing them grow and develop fascinates and inspires me continuously.
My family have been simply spectacular, during tough times they backed me solidly, urging me on to complete my goal.
My husband Anton is a wonderful man, full of love, generosity, kindness and a heart that just keeps on giving. His support and love for me has been indescribable, his contribution in helping me to bring this book together invaluable not only in ideas, but in every other way that one person could help and care for another.
My parents (Christine and Nic) have an immeasurable amount of time, patience and love for their children. Hours have been spent supporting me in ways that have allowed me to complete my book and regain full recovery.
Thank you to my sisters, Jess and Kate; you always make me smile and giggle. Thank you for your input on image content and for your overall sisterly love.
To my friends, your guidance, your faith and your loving support has injected strength into my life and left me feeling incredibly touched.
To my publishers, your patience and understanding could not go un-noted; you really have been an amazing team to work with.
Thank you to my lovely friend Jordan (Portal PR). You have encouraged me every step of the way.
To Kate McIntyre, thank you for being my cover girl! Thank you to Semone Hairstylist for being part of the front cover and to Richard Grebby Photography for shooting it.
Thank you to Jessica De Mattos Photography, your hard work and dedication to this project has been out of this world. My thanks also to John Burgess of Waterham Photographic Studios for all of your input; Samantha Jones, for the fun we had on our Olympic-style photo shoot; Ben Anker Photography for the beautiful image of Thandie; Will Sterling and the crew at Denim Magazine and to Matt Bristow (Rubber Duck Does Photography). A huge thank you also to session stylists Natalie Shirlaw, Vicki Lord and all my models, all of you have been incredible.
Every single person in my life has had something to do with making the possibility of this book a reality. Thank you, everyone x
Introduction
Previously I wrote a makeup book called How to Look Pretty Not Plastered a beginners guide, for teenagers. This book, How to Look Beautiful Forever, aims to inspire women of all ages to enjoy the magical world of makeup, whether you are 20 or 70+. I aim to show you how you can recreate new looks for yourself, and look beautiful forever. Whether you are a mum, a nan, a career woman, or a girl who just loves makeup, this book will teach you the skills to care for your skin and wear the look you want to wear from youth to maturity.
The correct makeup creates a youthful appearance no matter what age you are, and the aim of my book is to teach you how to do it with a positive approach. My focus is upon feeling confident in being who you are, and emphasising that lifes aim does not need to be to look forever young. The focus in the media and advertising seems to be on anti-ageing products, so its no wonder that so many people feel a sense of anxiety about growing older.
The fact is, beauty is as much about the mind as it is about the body. By focusing on what we dislike, or how we dont want to look, all we do is create more things that we decide that we want to change, or wish away. The trick is to start focusing on what you love, start to notice your features and fall in love with them.
Be comfortable and confident with whom you are, no matter what stage of life you are at that is what being beautiful really means.
Digital editing
As you are probably all aware, the digital manipulation of photographs is ubiquitous in the media world, and often the images you see in print, such as those in high-fashion magazines and makeup books, have been digitally edited. Even the ones that appear non-edited have often been changed in one way or another. Throughout this book, you will see step-by-step thumbnails of makeup being applied. These are raw, unedited so that you can see how makeup truly looks, even when applied by a professional makeup artist. They are followed by a final image, which will have been edited and is provided for inspiration. By doing this I hope to cater both for reality, and for our creative minds.
