Few spots soul-soothe like Germanys Black Forest. Each bend in the road on Trip 22: Schwarzwaldhochstrasse unveils a surprise: half-timbered fairy-tale-like villages, thunderous waterfalls, cuckoo clocks the size of houses. Inhale pine-scented air, navigate roller-coaster roads to middle-of-nowhere lakes, frolic in waterfalls and dine in fine restaurants.

Trip

The Rhine has long mesmerised artists, illustrated by the 19th-century paintings in Koblenz on Trip 12: Romantic Rhine. From Dsseldorf and Cologne, the majestic river snakes through churning whirlpools, castle-capped cliffs, medieval villages and vineyards. Trails lead to forests and fortresses, or to evenings sipping rieslings under chestnut trees.

Trip

There is no finer approach to Austrias elegant capital than through farmland, forest and vineyard-streaked hills on Trip 23: Along the Danube. In Vienna, park up and indulge in pedestrian meanderings around imperial Habsburg palaces and castles of unimaginable grandeur. Track down Mozart. Talk, read, dream and indulge like Trotsky and Freud did in a Viennese coffee house.
