Foreword
Looking at those long, and lengthening, waiting lists for organs and tissues is, I imagine, one of the most agonizing experiences a sick person can have.
Knowing that at the end of it a new life is waiting and yet having to get through every day until then, never knowing when that moment will come, could undermine anyone's morale.
Let's remember, however, those lists are growing not because there are fewer donors but because new, and still developing, techniques can cure people who even a few years ago had no chance. People who were considered far too old, too young, or too sick for a transplant are now regularly being given a second chance at life.
Those transplants are working better too. These are not experimental procedures any more. Tens of thousands of people all over the world are living healthy, productive lives with new hearts or corneas or lungs. Unlike other serious illnesses, where rehabilitation is typically painfully slow, these patients surprisingly often bounce back to life, with a sparkle in their eyes that shows they feel they have been reborn.
Time and again when talking to recipients, I hear someone who has been living like an invalid say, "I've never felt better in my life."
