ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
We must thank, first and foremost, the women and men of North Country Head Start in upstate New York. These are people who let us into their homes, drove out of their way to meet us, took time from hectic schedules, shared their stories and a part of their lives with us. We thank them, one and all.
This research was initiated by Jeanne Ellsworth. For reasons detailed in Chapter One, I (Lynda J. Ames) soon took the public lead, though Jeanne remained active backstage. When it came time to write this book, Jeanne's Other responsibilities in life left her too little of that precious commodity, time. I took over the writing (and rewriting). Jeanne continued to read drafts and discuss ideas and analyses. Though the writing is primarily mine, this project has been and is very much jointly authored.
During all of 1994, I was on leave because of a special program jointly administered by our union, United University Professions (UUP), and the State of New Yorkthe Nuala McGann Drescher Affirmative Action Leave Award. When Dr. Drescher was statewide president of UUP, she initiated this leave program to promote the tenure success of women, men of color, persons with disabilities, and Vietnam-era veterans. That leave gave me time away from the rigors and excitement of teaching to drive all over the North Country to talk with people in their communities, to observe Head Start centers, to transcribe notes, and to make sense of it all. I fear that in these conservative fiscal times, this program may be lost to us, and I will deeply regret that loss. Now, of all times, we need a multitude of voices in the academy; we cannot afford to revert, by default or design, to a narrow range of elite experiences and expression.
