Chapter 1
LIVING ROOMS
From colorful and modern to refined and traditional, these living spaces showcase the best of Southern decor. Were sharing our favorite ideas, so go ahead and steal a few secrets for your home.
1. PILE ON THE PATTERN
Every Southern house needs a room with a wonderfully eccentric (and truly personal) mix of patterns and colors. The key to making this bold look work is to stick to a strict palette of three to four colors.
2. INVEST IN WALLPAPER
Nothing transforms a room quite like wallpaperit can significantly upgrade the look and feel of a space and add texture and pattern to walls. While the effect is dazzling to the eye, its not a move for the faint of heart. Wallpaper is a commitment both in installation ( Hint: Hire a professional!)and removal. In addition, it can cost a bundle. If youre not quite willing to go the full mile, consider accenting a single wall to create a focal point within a space. Or, if youre on a budget and cant live without a certain wallpaper, mount and frame a yard or two. A hollow-core, flat-panel door papered and suspended is another way to skirt the issue, while yielding a similar result.
3. TILE WITH STYLE
Patterned cement tiles place emphasis underfoot. These decorative Cuban- inspired floor tiles are an old-world thought that makes a surprisingly modern statement. Mosaic tile floors look great anywhere but are especially smart options for kitchens, baths, entries, and porches areas that need routine cleaning. The size of the tiles should be compatible with your rooms square footage. Long story short: Dont put a large-scale pattern in a small space (or vice versa).
4. HINT AT MODERN
WE LOVE IT! Mix and match frames and mats that lend flair to a grouping of wall art.
Merge the past with the present by juxtaposing a super-sleek piece with a traditional mix. This groovy lounger found at a garage sale injects that stylish edge.
5. GET WHITE RIGHT
Yes, that perfect blanched hue does exist. When painting white walls, opt for a shade with a tint of cream or taupe to keep the result from appearing hospital-like. Walls appear white but without the starkness. Try It: Swiss Coffee (OC-45) by Benjamin Moore
6. CHOOSE SMART MATERIALS
In lieu of a traditional wood coffee table, two cast-concrete cubes make a contemporary statement. Not only are they unmatched in durability, but theyre also constructed at minimal expense.
7. OPT FOR ROMAN SHADES
Skip formal draperies, and go with simple linen shades that welcome natural light. With less fabric yardage required to make them, the end cost is lower than that of custom floor-to-ceiling curtains.
8. COLOR WITH CONFIDENCE
Paint can make or break a room and is an easy (and inexpensive)decorative fix you can do yourself. Bold color helps small spaces appear larger and allows big, oversize rooms to feel cozy. It also helps a windlowless space feel less cavernous. Dont be afraid of adding color to ceilings and trimits an unexpected trick that has a major wow factor!
Small Doses, Please Call attention to windows, trim, or architectural features, such as window muntins, with a bold hue. Its an easy accent that packs a big punch! Try It: Ruby Ring (S-G-150) by Behr
Seriously Cozy Deep hues play well at nightideal for after-hours entertaining. Counter rich color with natural wood and white upholstery. Try It: Expressive Plum (SW 6271) by Sherwin-Williams
