Preface

Reading Across the Disciplines, Seventh Edition, is designed to improve college students reading and thinking skills through brief skill instruction and extensive guided practice with academic disciplinebased readings. The text is structured around ten academic disciplines and career fields. The 30 readingsall of which aim to motivate studentsare selected from college textbooks as well as from books, periodicals and popular magazines, newspapers, and Internet sources. The objective is to show the relevance of college studies to events and issues in everyday life through the use of engaging readings.

Purpose

The primary purposes of the text are to teach essential college reading skills and to guide their application in each of ten academic disciplines and career fields. The text develops basic vocabulary and comprehension skills, as well as inferential and critical-reading and -thinking skills. In addition to developing overall reading skills, the text also introduces students to discipline-specific reading skills. Each chapter in , Classroom Simulation: Textbook Reading and Writing, provides a realistic model for reading and learning from textbooks within a classroom setting.

Another important goal of the text is to demonstrate to students the relevance and utility of college courses to their daily lives. The book attempts to answer the long-standing question frequently asked by students, Why do I have to take a course in history, biology, etc.? The book presents readings that show students how academic disciplines embrace and investigate topics of interest and concern to everyday human experience.

New to The Seventh Edition

This revision focused on strengthening the books focus on textbook reading skills within specific academic disciplines. The main goals of this revision were (1) to create a new Part Two with chapters that focus on the unique characteristics of reading mathematics and literature; (2) to provide a new chapter in the handbook that teaches the structure of argument; (3) to bring active reading and textbook learning strategies to the front of the handbook section; and (4) to refocus the Success Strategies to emphasize adapting reading and study strategies to different academic reading situations.

New Part Two: Specialized Reading Skills for Academic Disciplines.

Because reading mathematics and literature can be particularly challenging to students, a new section of the book has been created to devote special attention to, and more complete coverage of, the skills required for reading in these disciplines.

  • : Mathematics. This chapter explains the characteristics of mathematics that make it unique and distinct from many other disciplines. Students learn some general methods for reading in mathematics and specific strategies for how to read example problems and how to read and solve word problems. Three readings, two taken from mathematics textbooks, offer opportunities for skill application and practice.

  • : Literature. This chapter explains the features of literature that make it unique and unlike many other academic disciplines. Students learn to read and interpret poetry, short stories, and novels. For instruction and practice, the chapter includes two poems, two short stories, and two excerpts from novels.

New Handbook Chapter on Argument.

, Analyzing Arguments, has been added to Part One. This chapter helps students understand the structure of an argument and offers strategies for reading and evaluating arguments. Errors in logic are also presented.
