Foreword
In her introduction to this text, Eryl Evans clearly defines her aim in compiling this bookto provide clinicians with practical management and therapeutic suggestions for assisting laryngectomees at different stages of rehabilitation. In fact, this book covers much more than this modest aim. Eryl has provided the most up-to-date information, including a comprehensive section on Surgical Voice Restoration (notably the BlomSinger procedure) which will greatly assist clinicians new to this technique who may be lacking in knowledge and in confidence. Although the book is filled with accurate detail and helpful suggestions, the atmosphere pervading the text is one of sympathy and sensitivity towards the patient.
Since Gaye Murrills attended the Mayo Clinic Laryngectomee Rehabilitation Seminar in 1977, and Yvonne Edels followed in 1979, therapists in this country have attempted to promote laryngectomee rehabilitation in the United Kingdom by introducing modern practices learnt there. Eryl has joined this group by using her training at the Mayo Clinic to introduce Surgical Voice Restoration at her own hospital in Swansea and to produce this helpful and practical management book.
The chapter on pre-operative visiting gives accurate and sensible advice for the clinician to follow and the issues which may arise at this time are covered sensitively and sympathetically. Wherever possible, advice is followed with references to the literature and this helps the clinician who wishes to read further into the subject. Following in a logical progression, from pre-operative visit to post-operative therapy and even a discussion of the role of the clinician in terminal care, Eryl shows a sensible and practical approach in her suggestions, and her experience in laryngectomy is evident from the text. The much-needed section on evaluation and assessment for Surgical Voice Restoration and the clarity of the illustrations in the text should make this area of laryngectomee rehabilitation now accessible for any clinician who is undertaking this work.
