A ROUGH GUIDE TO ROUGHGUIDES
Published in 1982, the first Rough Guide to Greece was a student scheme that became a publishing phenomenon. Mark Ellingham, a recent graduate in English from Bristol University, had been travelling in Greece the previous summer and couldnt find the right guidebook. With a small group of friends he wrote his own guide, combining a highly contemporary, journalistic style with a thoroughly practical approach to travellers needs.
The immediate success of the book spawned a series that rapidly covered dozens of destinations. And, in addition to impecunious backpackers, Rough Guides soon acquired a much broader readership that relished the guides wit and inquisitiveness as much as their enthusiastic, critical approach and value-for-money ethos.
These days, Rough Guides include recommendations from budget to luxury and cover more than 120 destinations around the globe, as well as producing an ever-growing range of ebooks.

INTRODUCTION TO THE YUCATN
Until the 1960s, when proper road and rail links were finallycompleted, the Yucatn Peninsula the states of Campeche, Yucatn and Quintana Roo had more contact with Europe, Cuba and the US than with central Mexico. Today, theregion remains distinct, with traditional Maya life alongside massive touristattractions such as the great ruins of Chichn Itz and the super-resort of Cancn.Once the province of Maya rebels and palm-plantation owners, the Caribbean coast isnow the so-called Riviera Maya, which includes the towns of Playa del Carmen andTulum. But away from these big centres, especially in the south, where settlementsare sparsely scattered in dense forest, theres still a distinct pioneeringfeel.
