Introduction

About Author:

Sanjay D is born and brought up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu southern part of India. He is always fascinated about Tamil and loved the language with all his heart. He started teaching Tamil to many foreigners and through that gained lots of experience in understanding the difficulty foreigners have in learning the Tamil language. So, he prepared an organized and systematic course to help them learn and speak the language with ease and better pronunciation. This book is the ultimate result of years of experience in teaching Tamil to Indians and foreigners.

About Tamil:

Tamil is a Dravidian language spoken by more than 70 million people worldwide. The two countries where Tamil is predominantly spoken are India and Sri Lanka. In India, Tamil is the mother tongue of people in the state of Tamil Nadu and in Sri Lanka, one fourth of the inhabitants are Tamil speakers who migrated from Tamil Nadu many years ago. Tamil is an official language of Singapore and Sri Lanka. Over many years, Tamil speakers have migrated to other countries like Singapore, Malaysia, USA, Canada, UK, Germany, etc. Tamil is one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world. It is also stated as 20th in the Ethnologue list of most-spoken languages worldwide. Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions from 500 BC have been found on Adichanallur and 2,200-year-old Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions have been found on Samanamalai. It has been described as "the only language of contemporary India, which is recognizably continuous with a classical past. The variety and quality of classical Tamil literature have led to its being described as "one of the great classical traditions and literatures of the world". Tamil has a very rich culture and a visit to Tamil Nadu will provide you multiple opportunities to experience the beauty of the place and the language. Tamil Nadu has Mahabalipuram, a monolithic temple with rock sculptures carved in the seventh century.

  • Even if I give the transliteration for the Tamil script, the possibility that you read with correct pronunciation is less. For e.g. , (TL: vaNakkam), I am sure that five different people will read the transliteration vaNakkam in five different ways depending on their English accent.
  • The time taken to learn to read in Tamil is only approx. 10 hours.
  • When you learn to read the Tamil scripts, you will be able to understand and pronounce Tamil letters with much ease, also you will be more independent in learning Tamil.

Due to all the above reasons, I highly recommend you to learn to read the Tamil script, I have provided the first two lessons with audio especially to train you to learn to read in Tamil and along with this book you are eligible for 1 hour free Learning to read in Tamil training lesson from me to help you read the Tamil scripts better.

6) You are not expected to learn all the vocabularies before you begin, it is recommended to learn vocabularies little by little. But you are expected to learn and memorize Pronouns and their suffixes, Verbs, and their conjugated forms as they are frequently used throughout the book.

7) Once you are able to read in Tamil, little by little stop being dependent on Transliteration that I have given for the Tamil script, please ignore them as much as possible.

8) Keys to most of the exercises are given at the end of the book.

9) Please try to understand every part given in the book, a lot of effort has been put in this book to explain in great detail with lots of examples, a concept or a part that is being mentioned in one chapter will not be repeated in other chapter. So I expect you to put a lot of effort in understanding whats given in the book rather than memorizing the Tamil words.

What to Expect from the Book and How This Book is Designed.

Tamil language is a lot different from English be it the script or the grammar etc., there are lots of rules and grammars involved in the language, if you were to learn everything before speaking the language you will have to learn forever. So what I did is I have taken some important key grammar topic, words and suffixes required and explained them in great detail so that you can get started to speak in Tamil.
