CONTENTS
PREFACE
We are excited to share this second edition of Tennis Anatomy with you. Because new research pertaining to training, conditioning, player evaluation, and playing techniques for the competitive player changes rapidly, each chapter has been expanded with new, updated information and exercises based on the most practical applications of the latest research. In addition, the chapters have been reordered to provide you with a logical kinetic chain sequence of exercises (see for more detailed information). Finally, for this book to continue to be the most comprehensive illustrated resource for tennis conditioning, we provided a significantly greater emphasis on movement training as well as injury prevention.
Competitive players of all ages and levels, from junior ranks to collegiate events and professional tours to adult and senior competitions, will benefit from the new text and anatomical illustrations. In addition to players, we also strongly recommend this resource for tennis coaches, strength and conditioning professionals, physical therapists, medical professionals, and personal trainers who work with tennis players and want to learn more about effective exercise selection and the biomechanics and physiology of tennis. The exercises have been carefully developed and selected to relate to the techniques of the various tennis strokes and, therefore, will assist in overall performance and injury prevention. The text in each chapter further explains the function of the anatomy shown in the illustrations. The anatomical illustrations that accompany the exercises are color coded to indicate the primary and secondary muscles and the connective tissues featured in each exercise.
The first chapter has been updated and provides an in-depth overview of the physical demands of the sport, the relationship of court surfaces and playing styles, the anatomy of each of the tennis strokes, and physiological variables to consider when designing a training program. The new has been expanded to include new information and exercises related to postural mechanics and injury prevention. All the chapters have been significantly enhanced to feature new, key elements.
As with the first edition, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) supported this project and will use the book in addressing the latest training techniques at all levels of the game. These levels will include programs such as Net Generation, Player Development, Coaching Education, and Collegiate and Adult League Tennis. Tennis Anatomy will continue to be a valuable resource for players at each of these levels. So, whether you are a 10-and-under junior competitive player, a 90-and-over division competitor, or somewhere in between, this book provides you up-to-date, practical training information while you learn more about your bodys anatomy and the tennis strokes. Adding these tennis-specific conditioning methods and developing a clearly defined strength training program will surely help you take your game to the next level.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
So many people, directly and indirectly, have encouraged and supported our professional careers in significant ways. Over the years, we have received coaching, teaching, and research advice from many tennis and sport science and sport medicine experts, both nationally and internationally. Unfortunately, we are not able to mention all of them, and we apologize for that. However, we do want to highlight some key people and organizations that have had a direct effect on preparing us for this project.
First, we would like to thank the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for partnering with us in bringing this project to fruition and sport science experts Jack Groppel, Jim Loehr, and Ron Woods for supporting us for many years and helping to initiate the USTA sport science department and committee in the organization. After several decades, these efforts continue under the guidance of Paul Lubbers and his staff. Gordon Smith has supported the idea of both the first and second editions of this book.
