At the time of writing this book, 1.6% of the population meets the criteria for borderline personality disorder, or BPD. Theres a good chance you will meet someone with the condition at some pointassuming that you havent already.
BPD is a misunderstood mental illness. People with this diagnosis are often stereotyped as manipulative or crazy. This stigma stops them from seeking help and leaves them feeling alienated from family and friends. This book separates the myths from the facts. Everyone with BPD has a unique set of experiences. For example, some people have trouble keeping their temper under control. For others, feelings of emptiness are the worst part of their illness.

What is a personality disorder?
Your personality is made up of your behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Taken together, they set you apart from others and make you unique.
Theres no such thing as a best personality type. You might be optimistic or cynical, outspoken or quiet, easy-going or highly organized. We are all different, and thats OK. As long as your personality doesnt stop you from living a fulfilling life or forming relationships, theres no reason to worry. However, some people have personality traits that make it hard for them to function in everyday life. Mental health professionals say that someone with this problem has a personality disorder.
A personality disorder is a set of unhelpful, destructive behaviors and traits that persist over time and in different situations. These disorders usually start in adolescence. By adulthood, someone with a personality disorder routinely uses unhealthy behaviors and coping strategies, and this causes problems at college, work, and at home.
Exercise: How Would You Describe Your Personality?
Write a list of at least 10 traits that you feel describes your personality. Are these traits positive, neutral, or negative?
