Introduction

I want to thank you and congratulate you for downloading the book, Digital Photography For Beginners - Simple Digital Photography Tips And Tricks To Help You Take Amazing Photos With Your Camera.

This book contains proven steps and strategies on how to master digital photography in order to take the best photos with your camera.

If you are fond of photography or you simply want to learn how to capture a magnificent photo using your digital camera, you are more likely to benefit from a few tips than going cold turkey on your approach. This is especially because there is much more to photography than taking a picture and uploading on your favorite social media website. You need to be creative, stable and divergent, and this is what makes the world of difference between a professional photographer and an amateur.

I will teach you actionable tips and tricks that you can apply in your everyday photography so that you can make the most from every opportunity you get to take photos. By reading this book, you will discover that taking photos is more than pressing the capture button.

Thanks again for downloading this book, I hope you enjoy it!

The Exposure Triangle Learning About Exposure

As I mentioned in the introduction, taking photos is more than just pressing the capture button. Once you understand how to use the settings in your digital camera, you will soon realize how powerful that simple camera is. Taking photos is more about the photographer than it is about the camera!

Basically, there are three elements of photography: ISO, Aperture and shutter speed. The exposure of an image is worked out at the intersection of the three elements.

Note: A variation in one of the elements will affect the other two. This means that you always need to know all the elements at the back of your mind and not trying to isolate only one of the elements.

Different people describe the relationship between the three elements using different metaphors. Here are the three common ones used.

#1 The window:

Picture your camera as a window that has shutters that close and open. Let the aperture be the size of the window. The bigger it is, the more light the room receives, and the brighter it becomes. Shutter speed is the number of times your window opens and closes. If you leave it open for long, more light will come in. Now, picture yourself in the room with your sunglasses on. The light that comes in desensitizes your eyes, exactly like a low ISO.

There are many ways you can increase the amount of light getting in the room - photo 1

There are many ways you can increase the amount of light getting in the room. You could prolong the length of time the shutters are open i.e. decrease the shutter speed or you could expand the size of the window i.e. increase the aperture. On the other hand, you could just take off your glasses, so in this case, expand the ISO. It might be a little stretched, but you get the idea.

#2 Sunbaking

One other way to think of it is to picture the camera exposure as getting a suntan. This scenario is relatively subjective, given that everyone has a different sensitivity to sun from the rest; some are more sensitive than others are. In this context, shutter speed is the amount of time you spend out under the sun. The more time you spend under the sun, the higher your chances of getting a tan. However, spending too much time in the sun might mean that you are too exposed. Aperture, in this scenario, can be taken to represent the sunscreen you apply on your skin. Depending on its strength, sunscreen tends to block the sun rays at different rates. Using a higher strength sunscreen will basically mean decreased sunlight getting through to your skin. Therefore, this means that even someone with a highly sensitive skin can stay for longer periods in the sun (that is, if you decrease the aperture, you can reduce the shutter speed and/or depreciate the ISO).

. 3 Update This is the third most common metaphor used to relate the digital - photo 2

#3 Update

This is the third most common metaphor used to relate the digital camera exposure, also known as the Garden Hose. The aperture is the width of the hose, the shutter speed is the length of time the hose is kept on and the ISO is the pressure of the water.

Mastering Photography-How To Blend The Various Features For Better Quality Photos

It takes a lot of exposure to master the art of digital camera exposure. More often than not, it is a gambling act and even the most proficient photographers sometimes tweak their settings along the way as they experiment. Remember that if you change one element, it will impact both the exposure of the image and its other aspects. That is, if you change the aperture, the depth of the field will change while if you change ISO, it will affect the graininess of the shot and if you change the shutter speed, it will affect the motion being captured.

The benefit of digital cameras is that they are the best beginner learners tool to know about exposure. You have the benefit of taking as much shots as possible without incurring any losses. Moreover, you can also shoot in Auto mode and Manual mode, as well as semi automatic modes such as shutter priority modes and aperture priority modes that make it easier to make decisions about some of the elements of the triangle as you leave the camera to take care of the other elements.

ISO

Previously, in the traditional photography, ISO was the degree of sensitivity of a film to light, and was measured in numbers. You may have seen them on films represented as (100, 200, 400, 800, and so on). If the sensitivity of the film is low, it will be represented with a lower number and it means you are using finer grain in your shots. Generally, higher ISO settings are normally used in darker scenes in order to get a faster shutter speed. For instance, when you are taking pictures in an indoor sports event, you will use higher ISO to freeze the action in dimmer light. However, higher ISOs tend to produce relatively noisier shots. Here is an illustration with the two arrangements. The left image is taken with an ISO of 100, while the second one is taken with an ISO of 3200.
