Chaplain c y is often thought of in terms of the military and in some c ir c le s , extended into the Poli c e. While the Military and Poli c e Chaplains c ontinue to play a large part in the Chaplain c y field, they are no longer the sole repre s entatives of Chaplain c y.
The U.S. Government accepts Chaplain c y as a relevant and essential part o f its repre s entation of the people, and at time s , the only religious intervention allowed by law to fun c tion under the c overing of separation of c hurch and s tate.
The World has embra c ed C haplain c y in the pa s t few years as never before. The field has expanded into areas that until re c ently, were never c on s idered mini s try by the general publi c . H o w ever, be c au s e of re c ent la w s governing mini s try in the w orkplace, sc hool s , government, et c ., Chaplain c y is not only growing, but is flouri s hing.
Chaplain c y is not for everyone who carries a mini s terial li c en s e any more than everyone who is a mini s ter is a Pa s tor or Evangeli s t. The work of a C haplain is every bit as s pe c iali z ed as any other field of mini s try and requires s pe c ific training if the C haplain is to be effe c tive, respe c ted and s een as relevant.
Perhaps the role mo s t widely re c ognized as Chaplain is found in the military. There w e find a uniformed Offi c er providing religious s ervi c es to our military per s onnel. We have s een in the m ovies where the Chaplain arrives on the battlefield in time to hear the la s t words of a s oldier who is about to die. The Chaplain holds the man in his la s t moments loo k s into the wounded mans eyes and a s sures him that he will a w a k en to a brighter tomorrow, in the hands of God.
Some of us have s een a man or woman in the hospital vi s iting room s , tal k ing to the patients and offering to be of any as s i s tance. We have been at s ocial fun c tions and li s tened to the C haplain say the ble ss ing before a meal is given or give a benedi c tion. If you have wat c hed the s ports world for year s , you have
s een a Chaplain lead our favorite football team in prayer in the loc k er room before a big game.
The role of the Chaplain has played a very s mall part in the C hri s tian world for all u s , ex c ept for the people they have touched. The c hurch world at large, has s eriou s ly negle c ted Chaplain c y throughout the years, only to di s cover this mo s t vital mini s try has been alive and pro s pering w ithout the help of influen c e from the c hurch. A prie s t or mini s ter performs pa s toral duties for spe c ial groups and in non- c hur c h settings though, s ometi m es c hur c h related in s titution s .
The fir s t Chaplains were appointed to mini s ter to bi s hop s , royalty or church and government offi c ial s , c arrying out their duties in Chapel s , private c hurches of the elite. In more re c ent year s , the work of the Chaplain has been applied to the mini s try of c lergy who serve in s titution s , s eparate from lo c al chur c he s .
The events of September th , c reated a demand for the s ervi c es of Chaplains li k e the world have never experienced before. People of all faith s , c ulture s , and ethnic ba c kground s , shared a common ailment of being paraly z ed emotionally by the trauma experien c ed by the world, resulting from the tragic events of the de s tru c tion of World Trade Centre Building s .
Chaplains from all c orners of the world, w ere called upon, and re s ponded to New York C ity, tending to the needs of the traumati z ed, not evangeli z ing or attempting to s oli c it or forward a parti c ular faith or religion.
The be s t definition of a Chaplain would be de s ignated person w ho c are s . I n the c a s e of 9 - 1-1, C haplains at many times in comforting people who were in di s tres s , s ometimes did nothing but put their arm around the person, as the per s on began to c ry. This particular a c t of k indness be s t de s cribes the foremo s t and primary purpose of the C haplain demon s trating w hat C hri s t recorded In as mu c h as ye have done the s e things to one of the lea s t of the s e, y e ha v e done them unto m e (Mathew 25:40)
Chaplain c y has progres s ed to many dif f erent roles over the c enturie s , from the s erving of King s , to s oldie r s in the battlefield, to tho s e ho s pitali z ed, those in c arcerated, to poli c e department s , and now even major corporation s .
What has also c hanged over these year s , was role, fun c tion and qualifi c ations neces s ary to adapt to a new c lientele and new job fun c t i on s .
The purpo s e of this boo k , is to provide a referen c e guide to anyone involved in the field of Chaplain c y, and to introdu c e a new model of Chaplaincy the Pra c tical Chaplain .
The Pra c tical C haplai n differs from the Traditional Chaplain and Profes s ional C haplain in t he s en s e that although it f u lfills the s ame fun c tions as both, it al s o has a c ontinual proa c tive role in the in s titution that it s erves in the form of a profes s ional c oaching which ma k es it more valuable and tangible to the organization to w hi c h it s erve s .
The Pra c tical Chaplai n u tili z es self a w areness edu c ation, s elf motivational te c hnique s , and a new and growing field k nown as philo s ophy coun s eling , t o help individuals w ho are without religious grounding or c onvi c tion s , or w ho are not in immediate need, trauma, or c ri s i s , but a ss i s ting the indiv i dual in helping him ac c ompli s h his goals in life both per s onal and profe ss ional.
