Delivering Water and Power: GIS for Utilities (Applying GIS series)

Modernize workflows, create actionable data, reduce costs, and prepare for new challenges.

Location is at the core of many utilities daily and long-term planning, but its about more than making a map. In Delivering Water and Power: GIS for Utilities, see how public and private utilities around the world have implemented geographic information systems (GIS) to visualize and analyze data for situational awareness, operational efficiency, and asset management.

Through web apps, online maps, dashboards, and other GIS solutions, utility professionals develop a deeper understanding of network maintenance and performance within a real-world context, increasing operational flexibility, creating a safer environment for workers, and raising customer satisfaction.

Edited by Pat Hohl, Esris director of electric industry solutions, and Keith Mann, an Esri product engineer.

Applying GIS

The Applying GIS series explains how to become a spatial thinker with ideas and strategies for building location intelligence into your profession, industry, or discipline. Each pocket-size book is divided into relevant topic areas that include a set of case studies and a road map for getting started with GIS.

Introduction

Many people dont understand how utilities work or sympathize with the challenges they face. But when a transformer explodes and knocks out the lights and power in a neighborhood, people quickly become aware of their dependency on utility services. Complex electricity, gas, and water networks interweave with the fabric of our society but are largely ignored or taken for granted until something goes wrong.

Behind the scenes, utility managers are concerned about maintaining and improving their networks. They worry about improvement projects, the cost of repairs, and the safety of their field personnel. They look for ways to increase operational efficiency and raise customer satisfaction. Every day, utility managers strive to help their organizations become more modern enterprises.

In todays world, modernization includes the application of new technologies, such as sensors and data visualization tools to better monitor and understand network performance. Inevitably, new technologies generate an overwhelming amount of data that can be difficult to process or understand. How do utilities put all that data into context so that everyone can understand it? How do utilities turn understanding into action?

These missing puzzle pieces are connected to location. The idea that each asset, structure, problem, and opportunity exists somewhere in the world is an old one, but it has never been more relevant than today. Location intelligence has never been more useful.

Using a geographic information system (GIS), utilities can give context to data from sensors and visualization toolsa place within the landscape. GIS acts like a data conduit, channeling information through a precise geographic model to show obvious and hidden relationships between the network and its surrounding environment.

Armed with location intelligence, utilities acquire a better understanding of the risks and hazards that can disrupt services and increase costs for the utility and its customers. Managers can improve the reliability and safety of daily operations. They can monitor where the grid is performing at peak efficiency and where it is not. Managers can make faster, more effective decisions about prioritizing projects, deploying field crews, and taking care of their customers.
