Dear Reader, Luxury is an elastic term, not to say indefinable. Is it a thing? A process? Is it big? Or small? Two- or three-dimensional? For some, it might mean adding to, or completing, a beautiful collection of objects, be they watches, artworks, vintage cars, stamps. For others, its diving into a mountain lake after a long hike in the heat of summer. Luxury can simply mean spending industrial quantities of money on a superyacht, or eating beluga caviar by the shovelful. It can also mean buying oneself, or receiving, a gift in memory of a special occasion, a marriage anniversary, or graduation. All too often, though, luxury is in fact connected with price and expense, which is, in turn, linked to exclusivity, because it implies that fewer people can have the object of desire, so it becomes more valuable.

Its a strange syllogism based on the classic supply-and-demand economics of Dr. Seusss Sneetches , only at a very high level. In the final analysis, for the consumer, luxury and luxuriousness are a very personal matter. To use the old platitude, its in the mind of the beholder. The object, whatever it may be, must possess the quality of rarity for the receiver, but not necessarily for the world at large. It must and will engage in a relationship that can change over time and even end.

For brands, however, especially in the so-called luxury industries, it tends to be all about the products. These must trigger enough desire in a vast array of individuals to result in purchase, regardless of the reason. In the case of watches, Yvan Arpa, founder and creative head of ArtyA, often points out that time-telling is ubiquitous thanks to the mobile phone, so a watchour industry, if you willhas no other purpose than to generate an emotional or intellectual bond. It can be knowledge of the technical hijinks insidea Greubel Forsey is an almost ecstatic-religious experience for the true connoisseuror it may be something as simple as the materials of the case: warm golds, icy clear platinum and steel, brittle and light titanium, techy-techy carbon and PVD coatings, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. The one unifying factor, however, will be how this is all put together and packaged, namely the design. That is what delivers the first wow when looking at the piece, or what the French call the coup de foudre (love at first sight).

This edition of Wristwatch Annual , my tenth, almost inadvertently gravitated toward watch design topics. The article Engineering Emotion () examines the tourbillon, a grande complication invented for pocket watches that no longer serves any real engineering purpose, say some, but has become a bit of kinetic art. The periphery of a watch also makes demands on designers. Winders, shops, storage facilities, even testers and loupes all need a shape that will be attractive to the user. So this year, Wristwatch Annual once again takes a brief look at the industry the watch industry has spurred, from analyzers to display cases. As for brands, there are 126 being presented.

Between the pages devoted to the Big Names, like Patek (whose Nautilus might be phased out), Rolex, and several Swatch brands, youll find many new models of existing brands and a couple of newcomers to the book and to the industry, like Ming, from Kuala Lumpur, Angelus, AVeritas, Reservoir, and more. A chance meeting with Erdal Yildiz at Baselworld resulted in a chapter on his brand, Tourby. U.S. brands are, as usual well represented, so do not miss the grandmaster from Pennsylvania Roland Murphys spread at RGM, or the Americana redux watches of Vortic, which successfully fought off an injunction by a modern brand with an old name against the nineteenth-century dials he had been using. Deep Blue is back, too, with more diving watches. Wristwatch Annual prides itself on giving space to the smaller brands, sometimes the unknown and independent ones.
